Textbook Adoption Form
  • Hand them in on time.
  • The sheer volume of orders and changes creates
    problems.
  • If you have not decided on a book by the deadline
    let us know why.
  • Complete the form completely.
  • Missing information creates delays and holds up
the entire order from a publisher.
  • If supplies are required please list them on the
    form.
  • Research the book beforehand
  • Edition changes occur regularly (sales rep or
    faculty center)
  • Books go out of print.

    forms if needed

assist may have an earlier date.

    edition changes.
  • Please note whether the book is required,
    optional, or recommended.
  • Includes a history of the previous book used.
  • Please check these carefully and call if you have
    questions.

8
Textbook Adoption Form
  • Use the following area to list any additional
books or supplies needed for the class.
  • Supplies and books are NOT ordered for classes
    unless they are listed.
  • Include all listed information.

9
Textbook Adoption Form
  • Finally, sign and date the form.

10
Textbook Adoption Guidelines
  • Written by the Textbook Committee subcommittee
of the Quality Learning Student Council and the
    bookstore management.
  • The guidelines are available from the SJC
    Employee Intranet under Academic Resources.
  • Look under documents and click on the Textbook
    Adoption Guidelines.
  • Also available on the bookstore link (near
    future)
  • Most important tip when adopting a book
consider the 3 year adoption rule.

11
Book Representatives
  • They are sales people! They are looking out for
    the company.
  • Ordering bundles we keep customers in our store
but our customers want used books.
  • Make sure if purchasing a bundle ALL of the
    components are available separately.
  • If you arent going to use the extra parts in a
    bundle, dont order it!
  • Bundles make the components cheaper but create
    problems for used books.

12
Bundles
  • If bundles are ordered for a section, use all of
    the materials in it.
  • Students become frustrated during buyback when we
can only buy back the book below the standard
    pricing.
  • Students complain to us about not using all of
    the components.
  • We cannot buy back the components in a bundle.

13
Bundle Example
  • Beginning and Intermediate Algebra with My Math
    Lab
  • Retail 148.75
  • Used Pricing
  • Standard Pricing on book 108.00
  • My Math Lab 55.00
  • Total of 163.00
  • Used book is 14.25 MORE than a new bundle.

14
Price Adjustments for Used Book
  • Since the used book is more than new we have to
adjust to compensate for the cost of the access
    code.
  • During buyback the 148.75 bundle can now only be
purchased from the student for 51.
  • The total for the used bundle 128.95 (51 x
    markup 55 access code).

15
Custom Books
  • Take longer from the publisher as they are
    printed on demand.
  • Some can take 4-6 weeks for printing.
  • 10 Return privilege on custom orders.
  • 100 books ordered means only 10 copies can be
    returned.
  • Reorders take extended periods of time.
  • Since these are not available elsewhere, buyback
    is severely limited.

16
Book Changes
  • Students begin purchasing books as soon as they
    are available.
  • Avoid making changes to the required textbooks.
  • Students will open and use the bundle materials
    which makes them nonrefundable.
  • Check the books yourself.
  • Come to the bookstore at least 1-2 weeks before
    classes start.
  • If the book is incorrect it gives us time to get
    it corrected.
  • Checking the books on the shelf is the best way
to know what your students will show up with.

17
Changes Continued
  • Changing books the week of student charging is
    the worst possible time.
  • Currently we run 4 registers with only 4 full
time employees, there is no time to process these
    changes during student charging.
  • Students are already purchasing these books and
now must return the book and wait for the new one.

18
Effects of Book Change
  • One book change creates a domino effect.
  • Booklist must be edited to reflect the changes.
  • Booklist is online in bookstore now has to be
    edited to give correct info
  • They must be reprinted averaging 100 pages.
  • Business Office now has to edit student accounts
    who are 3rd party
  • Old books must be pulled returned.
  • Requires new shelf tag.
  • Shipping must be paid for new books to return
    old ones.
  • Purchase orders must be approved.
  • New books must be ordered and now put up.
  • Creates a large delay for the student.

19
Online Classes
  • List these separately and include only the
    REQUIRED materials.
  • If an access code is needed, list this as well.
  • A majority of students place orders the week
before classes start and expect the books there
    before classes start.

20
Printed Materials
  • Put these on the textbook adoption form even if
you will be placing the order at copy services.
  • Note if you will be placing the order yourself.
  • Price lists and tags are generated from these
  • Need to be in as early as possible preferably 2
    weeks before classes start.
  • Copy Services is busy during the first of the
    semester.
  • Any revisions need to be completed as soon as
    possible.
  • Any unusable overstock (i.e. revisions made) will
be charged to the corresponding school.

21
Returning Textbooks
  • Before sending students to the bookstore, know
    the bookstore return policy.
  • Certain dates are set forth and need to be
    followed.
  • Textbooks that have writing, highlighting, or are
not in new condition cannot be returned for a
    full refund.
  • If in doubt, call the bookstore first. 566-3260
