What is a Butterfly?
  • By Terasa Holmberg
  • For 3-6 grades

2
What is a butterfly?
  • Butterflies are not born exactly how they look.
They undergo a very big change.
  • There are three stages they must undergo before
    becoming a butterfly.

3
The Egg
  • A butterfly starts its life as an egg, often laid
    on a leaf.

4
The Larva
  • The larva (caterpillar) hatches from an egg and
eats leaves or flowers almost constantly.
  • The caterpillar molts (loses its old skin) many
times as it grows. The caterpillar will increase
up to several times in size before pupating.

5
The Pupa (Cocoon)
  • The caterpillar turns into a pupa. The pupa is a
    cocoon or chrysalis.
  • This is its resting stage.

6
The Butterfly
  • At the end of the resting stage a beautiful,
    flying adult emerges.
  • It is a butterfly!

7
The Anatomy
  • A butterfly, like any insect, consists of three
    basic parts
  • Head
  • Thorax
  • Abdomen

8
Interesting Facts
  • Butterflies range in size from 1/8 inch to almost
    12 inches!
  • They can see red, green, and yellow.
  • Top speed is 12 mph.
  • They cannot fly if their body temperature is less
    than 86 degrees.
  • There are about 24,000 species.
  • For more interesting facts go to

9
