• Universal
• Reliable

What is SGML?

• Standard Generalized Markup Language
• Created by the folks at IBM in the 1960s.
• International Standard that describes the
  relationship between a document's content and its
  structure.
• Comprised of plain ASCII text, combined with
  items in angle brackets,
• e.g. A Christmas Carol

So is SGML, HTML?

• Not Exactly
• SGML is the parent language from which HTML was
  created.
• SGML is more powerful , and customizable.

• Hyper Text Markup Language
• Mark up is used to describe the parts of a
  document.
• Uses tags to generate information into a web page.

• Basic type of tags used in a HTML

• XML is a language for describing other languages
• Derived from SGML

Future of Markup Languages

• XML can serve as an SGML output format
• XML will replace HTML where HTML is insufficient.
  
• XML will not replace either SGML or HTML
  Completely XML is compatible with both.
