Biographical Information
  • Born on March 30, 1945 in Ripley, England.
  • Raised by his grandparents thinking that they
    were his real parents and his mother was thought
    of as his sister.
  • Uncovered the truth of his real mother at age 9.
  • Went through a shock that lasted through his
    teens

Musical Beginnings
  • Became interested in American Blues during his
    teens.
  • Influenced by Blues musicians.
  • He took up the guitar and played Blues.
  • Soon found friends that were serious about
    playing Blues.
  • When he was 17 he joined The Roosters for a few
    months.
  • He then joined Casey Jones and the Engineers.
  • Started playing Electric Blues with electric
    guitar.
  • He was then in and out of many bands.

  • Martin Luther King made the I Have a Dream
    speech in 1963.
  • President Kennedy assassinated in November of
    1963.
  • First African American Supreme Court member in
    1967.
  • American and British Blues phenomenon throughout
    the late 50s and 60s.
  • British Invasion brought many British artists to
    America.
  • Inspired by many of the Blues musicians of the
    time.
  • Eric Clapton was a British artist that was part
    of the British invasion.

Musical Style
  • Performed American Blues.
  • Claptons music was unique in that even as the
    popularity of pop music grew, he stuck to the
    Blues, even if it meant quitting a band or
    forming one of his own.
  • Performances were peaceful and subtle.
  • Received the nickname Slowhand from how he
    would act on stage if he broke a string.

Achievements
  • Eric Claptons Blues style was an inspiration to
    many guitarists.
  • Received 17 Grammy Awards, an American Music
    Award, and he was inducted into the Rock n Roll
    Hall of Fame three times.
