What is it?

• A rapidly whilrling, funnel-shaped cloud
• Reaches from a storm cloud to Earth
• Can be a few meters to a few kilometers wide
• Winds up to 450 kph (200mph)

Make a tornado

• Have someone in group pick up the soda bottles.
• Flip them over so the water is on top and quickly
  rotate the top bottle in a circle.
• See diagram on next slide
• Watch how the water flows down into the lower
  bottle

When do tornadoes form?

• When warm, humid air from the Gulf meets cool,
  dry air from Canada

• Can be spotty
• In this picture, one sides of the street is
  destroyed and the other is mostly fine

• Damage can be catastrophic
• From high winds
• Even large objects can be moved great distances

• Flying debris can cause damage too
• Tornades have been known to embed grass in tree
  trunks

• Try to press a straw into a potato
• Now hold the straw as far away from the potato as
  possible
• Bring the straw towards the potato quickly
• Which time was it easier to get the straw in?

Tornado Safety

• The best place to be during a tornado is in an
  underground shelter
• If you dont have one, find an interior room on
  the first floor with no windows
• If you are in your car, get out and lay flat on
  the ground
