Title: Mondrians Journey to Abstraction
1Mondrians Journey to Abstraction
- Mondrian began as a realistic landscape painter
2He was influenced by the bright colours of the
Fauve artists, such as Matisse and Derain.

3The negative spaces in between the branches are
becoming more important, while the branches
themselves are almost disappearing into simple
lines.
- Mondrians style became increasingly more
abstract through the influence of the Cubist work
he experienced in Paris.
4Mondrians move to the city of Paris caused him
to move on from rural landscapes of trees to
urban views of buildings
5- Gradually, Mondrian abandoned the need to include
any recognisable references to the subjects he
was painting. He simplified his compositions
more and more until just the horizontal and
vertical lines were left.
Mondrian called his later grid work
"Neoplasticism" and believed that one day his
ideas would bring peace and order to this chaotic
world.
