Title: Equal Skills for Life Conference

1
Equal Skills for Life Conference
  • move on
  • with the
  • National Certificates

2
Workshop Aim
  • To give an overview of the National Project and
the Move On approach and positive messages about
the National Qualifications in Literacy and
    numeracy

3
What is Move On?
  • The Move On approach simply asks Do you need
English or maths qualifications to Move On?
  • It uses the National Certificates in Adult
Literacy and Numeracy as a promotion tool and to
accredit skills development at Levels 1 and 2.
  • Janet Anderson MBE, Director, Move On Project

4
Impact of having a Skills for Life need
  • Five times more likely to be unemployed
  • More likely to have housing problems
  • Less likely to be in good health
  • Less likely to vote
  • Over-represented in prisons and YOI

5
move on with the National Certificates
  • Move On is the strand within Skills for Life
that focuses on people with L1 and L2 literacy
    and numeracy skills
  • Traditionally skills for life programmes have
been offered by focusing on problems people have
    with reading, writing, maths
  • People operating at L1 and L2 literacy and
numeracy probably wont relate to having
problems but should focus on the benefits of
    having qualifications

6
Move on offers
  • A focused learning opportunity
  • A positive sell
  • An opportunity to train

7
move on offers learners
  • free skills check/test taster
  • free short course
  • strand 1 strand 2

    skills, own focus

About the National Tests
  • The tests are pitched at the same level as GCSE
maths or English.  They are shorter and more
focused on the skills required for work and life
generally. They tell you what level you are at
and not what you have covered in a two year
course. They prepare you for the next step.
  • The National Test in Adult Literacy and Numeracy
compares with the theory driving test - it checks
whether you have got the theory you need to
support the practical application of driving.
One supports the other, and you need both to be
successful.  People go on improving their skills
    after they have passed.

10
What are the national tests like?
  • Short (1 hr literacy, 1¼ hr numeracy) and
accessible40 multiple choice questions - like
    theory driving test
  • Available increasingly on demand
  • On paper and on screen Based on everyday
subjects e.g. home or workTry the practice
tests on the Move On website www.move-on.org.uk

What learners think
  • Research indicates a strongly positive response
    from learners
  • I quite enjoyed it, it wasnt like the sort of
things they forced you to do at school
  • It made me think I wouldnt mind doing another
    one
  • Got my mind working again after 3 years of no
    maths
  • Success rate in Somerset Move On pilot 92

13
Motivating potential learners
  • Simple promotion / screening have you got a GCSE
English or maths? If not your CV has a gap this
is your opportunity to fill it
  • You can modernise your skills by getting the new
    adult English and maths qualifications
  • While youre doing a qualification, you can get a
    second one for free
  • A stepping stone to a range of other learning
    opportunities
  • A 3 hour taster to see if you like it

14
move on offers recruiters
  • A simple, focused, positive approach to
    identifying and referring potential learners
  • Training on how to refer adult learners who have
no or limited qualifications in English or maths
  • Language to use and action to take to recruit
these non-traditional learners and support the
    Skills for Life campaign
  • Promotion resources badge, leaflet, contact
    card

15
move on is not
  • A 3 hour taster followed by a 30 hour course -
    necessarily
  • A way of pushing people through the National
    Certificates to achieve the Governments
    targets.
  • Ignoring the needs of Entry level SfL learners
