- Self-Declaration of Conformance
- Provided EMS auditor training to students from
Fort Carson and other military installations/activ
ities - Access to web-based software for data management
- SEMS document control
- Internal SEMS Awareness audit was performed in
July 2007. - Continued growth at the 2007 Annual Conference
460 registrants

- Challenges
- Fenceline to fenceline (installation-wide) and
community involvement in the SEMS - Differing missions and conflicting priorities
among assigned organizations, units and
activities, e.g. garrison operations compared to
mission readiness - Integration and alignment in planning, business
operations, deployment, redeployment,
mobilization, and sustainment (logistical)
processes - Responsibility, authority and accountability for
SEMS implementation clearly communicated to each
individual working, living and visiting Fort
Carson - Perception that sustainability and SEMS are the
sole responsibility of the environmental
organization

- Current project funding strategies usually based
on up-front cost rather than life cycle
cost/assessment practices - Education and awareness needs for a population
that has a normal 2-3 year turnover rate and
currently, the frequency of deployment/redeploymen
t of a large population that has potential to
significantly affect environmental compliance and
sustainability performance - Communication requirements in order to implement
an effective SEMS and achieve high levels of
performance - Imparting a culture of sustainability so that
every individual on the Installation supports and
contributes to implementing the concepts of
