2
What is a Biome?
  • Biomes are types of climates that are found
    around the world

3
Types of Biomes
  • Tundra - a cold dry environment
  • Rainforest - a warm climate with lots of animal
  • Grassland - a very green land
  • Desert - a very, hot, dry land
  • Deciduous Forest - Usually hot or cold summers or
    winters
  • Coniferous Forest - A large mass of cone bearing
    trees

4
Tundra
  • Earths Coldest biomes
  • Almost no trees or plants
  • Low biotic diversity
  • Average winter temperature is -34 C ,but the
average summer temperature is 3-12 C
  • Temperature -40C to 18C

5
Rainforest
  • Very hot climate
  • Average temperature is 20-25 c
  • Can rain a lot, up to the top of the trees
  • Rainfall exceeding 2000mm
  • Lots of wildlife including plants, animals and
    fish
  • Rains all year long

6
Grassland
  • Only a few trees
  • 25-35 cm of rainfall
  • Can be hot in the summer
  • Grass fires can occur in the summer
  • Vegetation Grasses (prairie clover, salvia,
    oats, wheat, barley, coneflowers)

7
Desert
  • Dry, hot climate
  • Can be very cold at night
  • Rainfall less than 50 cm
  • Vegetation Broadleaf trees (oaks, maples,
beeches), shrubs, perennial herbs, and mosses

8
Deciduous Forest
  • Trees where the leaves fall
  • Temperature varies from -30 C to 30 C
  • Precipitation  750 to 1,500 mm of rain per year
  • Vegetation  Broadleaf trees (oaks, maples,
beeches), shrubs, perennial herbs, and mosses

9
Coniferous Forest
  • 40C to 20C, average summer temperature is 10C
  • Most off the forest is in Canada, Europe, Asia,
    and the United States
  • Vegetation Coniferous-evergreen trees (trees
that produce cones and needles some needles
remain on the trees all year long)
