Title: Economic and social consequences

1
Economic and social consequences
  • Global warming and World Population

2
Main Effects of Global Warming on PopulationMain
thoughts
  • 1. Most people live near oceans and will be
    affected by sea level rise
  • 2. Glacial melting will rapidly deplete the
primary source of H2O replenishment of 100s of
    millions in India and Bangladesh.
  • 3. Poor people will be disproportionately able to
cope and adapt to these changes.
  • Contributed by Professor Carr

3
The facts
4
Why is population rising?
  • If replacement level same, mortality unchanged,
    population still grows
  • Population Momentum accounts for at least ½
    population growth
  • UN life expectancy 87.5 women and 82.5 men
    globally
  • Larger aging population

5
Simply put
  • As the population has increased from 2.5 billion
in 1950 to 6.2 billion in 2002, people have
progressively consumed greater amounts of fossil
fuel and engaged in more activities, such as
deforestation and the production of certain
chemicals, all of which produce carbon dioxide
    and other greenhouse gases.

6
Undeveloped countries vs. Developed Countries
  • Undeveloped countries exhibit more population
    growth than developed countries.
  • Possibly due to lack of resources like
  • Birth control
  • Free clinics
  • Sex education
  • Abortion etc.

7
In the year 2050
  • It is projected that the population will reach 9
    billion!!!
  • This means huge consequences in terms of resource
    usage and CO2 emission.

8
Where will this occur?
  • Projected population growth will occur in Africa,
Asia, Latin America, and small undeveloped
    nations.

9
Population increase leads to
  • Water, energy, arable land, and biological
    resources being consumed rapidly
  • demand for
  • Energy
  • Water
  • food

10
Social Effects of Global Warming on Population
  • Migration-from rural to urban, from flooded
coastal zones and other regions affected by
    climatic stress
  • Home to work distance increases-increase in CO2
  • Decrease fertility as a result of migration
  • Increased life expectancy-moving to areas with
    better living conditions
  • Pauperization-i.e. shanty towns

11
Population growth and Social Policy
  • Currently, policies used to limit growth
  • Limitation of children (China)
  • Access of family planning methods
  • Child care
  • Immigration regulations

12
Effects continued
  • As population grows-
  • resource use increases
  • As wealth grows-
  • resource use per capita increases
  • This means increase use in water, energy,
    transportation, deforestation etc.

13
Coastal Living Global warming full circle
  • Example of how populations effect global warming,
and how global warming will effect people
  • Mega cities on coast- litter of coast, waste in
oceans, loss of habitat, green space, increased
fossil fuels, etc., release of GHGs
  • Sea Level rise and coast degredation cause
population displacement and all issues that go
    along with it (economically, medically,
    resources,etc.)

14
Effects on Economics
  • Increased climate changes will change markets
  • Loss of agricultural products due to change in
    weather

15
Economic effects cont.
  • health care
  • construction efforts-transport
  • prevention methods
  • Loss of revenue at coastal regions
  • Global economic GDP losses have been estimated
between 5-20 per year as global warming
    continues

16
Effects on the poor
  • All of these economic changes will affect poor
people more than the wealthy because
  • The price of moving
  • Rising house market
  • If everyone moves, the area will raise prices to
    accommodate demanddrive out the poor
  • Loss of their initial revenue and adaptation to
    lower income
