SIBELIUS
Sibelius is a fast, easy to learn notation
software which not only allows you to write,
playback and print music. This program also
gives you the ability to extract each part from a
score and transpose each line, from concert
pitch, with a click of a button. Sibelius gives
you the ability to save your piece as a web page
so that people from around the world can hear
your music.
2Input/Output Menu
INPUT/OUTPUT MENU
When Sibelius is first installed you are asked to
choose your input and output devices. If you are
required to change these settings they can be
found in the Play/Flexi-Time menu.
3Choosing Input and Output
This window is where you can set up what is going
to play back your music and how you are going to
input your music if you are using an external
controller, such as a MIDI keyboard
Test each output device listed and only select
one to playback by clicking on the word. If you
are using an input device select which input it
is attached to. When hitting the keys you should
see the black box light up. Select MIDI Thru if
your MIDI keyboard has now sound of its own.

To begin a new project click on the New button
5Selecting Paper
SELECTING PAPER
There are a few details that you have to define
about your project before you start. First is
the type of manuscript paper you would like to
use. Choose A3, which is standard letter size.

SELECTING INSTRUMENTS
You now have to choose what type staves or
instruments you would like to write music for.
For now we will choose a simple treble staff.
7Program Interface
INTERFACE
There are a two main tools in the Sibelius
window. One is the Keypad which is used to
select the notes and rests you wish to add to a
piece you are creating. The other is called the
Navigator which helps you find your way around
your piece.

NAVIGATION
The Navigation window allows you to quickly move
around the piece. It gives you a birds eye view
of the entire work. To use the Navigation window
it is as simple as clicking and dragging the
white box around the window.
9The Keypad
KEYPAD
1. Along the top of the Keypad you will see the
numbers 1-4. These buttons allow you to stack
notes. For now you will only need to concern
yourself with having the 1 button pressed.
- 2. In the next row you will notice 5 different
symbols. Each of these buttons will put the
Keypad into a different mode. With each mode the
bottom section of the Keypad will change to show
attributes of that mode. The modes from left to
right are - Common Notes
- More Notes
- Beams/Tremolos
- Articulation
- Accidentals

The Modes
When a button (or combination of buttons) are
selected in the Keypad the cursor will turn blue
to show it is in input mode. The Common Notes and
More Notes modes act like one large mode which
means that no more than one note duration can be
selected at the same time.
To exit out of input mode click the arrow button
on the left side of the Keypad

The Modes
The other 3 modes, Beams/Tremolos, Articulation
and Accidentals, act as attributes to the first
two modes. Depending on what you would like to
add to your score the Keypad functions can be
used in combination.

12Changing Paper Size
PAPER SIZE
You may wish to be able to see more or less of
your piece at one time. To resize the paper
size you can choose an the appropriate size from
a drop down menu.
13Entering Notes
ENTERING NOTES WITH KEYPAD
To input notes using the computer keyboard select
desired note duration on the Keypad. You will
notice the cursor arrow will change color and
direction. You are now in input mode. Click on
staff where you would like the notes to be.
14Dragging Notes
DRAGGING NOTES
To move note around once they are on the staff
click and hold the note while you move it to the
desired position then release. This can be done
while still in input mode.
15Add Articulations
ARTICULATIONS
To add articulations to notes once they are on
the staff, select the note then find desired
articulation on the Keypad. To select more than
one note be sure to turn off input mode clicking
the arrow button on the Keypad. Hold down the
SHIFT key while dragging a box around desired
notes.

16Deleting Notes
DELETING NOTES
To delete notes once they are on the staff click
the note head so it is selected then press delete
on the computer keyboard. This can be done while
still in input mode.

17Playback
PLAYBACK
At any time you can listen to the file that is
open by clicking on the Play button. To start
listening from the beginning select those staves
you wish to hear. This can be done by holding
down the SHIFT key.

18Create Menu - Bars
THE CREATE MENU
The Create menu is where you will find those
score attributes that you will not find on the
Keypad. After choosing the attribute you then
click on the score where you would like it placed.

INSTRUMENTS
One important thing to remember is the Instrument
attribute in the Create menu deals with the type
of staves that will appear on the paper not the
sound you will hear when the piece is played.

Select the Instrument staff types you would like
to add to your score. You can add them one at a
time or all at once. Select multiple Instruments
by holding down the CTRL key.
21Create Menu Key Signature
KEY SIGNATURES
If the piece you are creating modulates to D in
bar 4 your score can be easily altered to show
this. In the Create menu select Key Signature.

Choose the key of D then click on Bar 4 in your
score. This will place the key change on each
stave along that bar line.

TIME SIGNATURE
Lets say that at Bar 4 changed to the key of D
but it also goes into ¾ time.

After selecting the correct time signature in the
window click in Bar 4.

LINE
Attributes like crescendos, decrescendos, trills
and ending markers can be found under Line in the
Create menu. If you wanted the treble staff to
have a decrescendo in Bar 3 you would do the
following.

After selecting the decrescendo return to your
score then click and drag the symbol for the
position and size you require.

TEXT
There are many different ways Text is used in
scores. One of the ways you could use text would
be to be to add a title.

EXTRA STAFF
By using the Extra Staff function in the Create
menu you will first select the staff you would
like to duplicate and then choose where this
staff will be placed.
29Changing Staff Sounds
CHANGING STAFF SOUNDS
At any time you can change the sound that is
heard from any particular staff. Select
Play/Flexi-time/Sounds. Here you will see listed
all sounds currently selected and the staves they
are assigned to. Click on the sound to open a
list to choose a new one.
30Transposing
TRANSPOSING
When creating different instruments for your
score Sibelius will allow you to quickly
transpose from concert pitch to instrument pitch.
On the far right of the screen you will find a
Transp button. When it is pressed the piece is
in instrument pitch and when it is not the score
is in concert pitch.
31Extracting
EXTRACTING
Transcribing parts is very time consuming but if
it done in Sibelius it is quick and simple.
32Extract Multiple Parts
Choose which instrument you would like to extract
parts for and chose OK. To select more than one
part hold down CTRL key

SAVING AS SIB
There are a few ways that you can save your
score. One way is to save it as an .sib file
which will allow you to bring it back into
Sibelius to edit.

SAVING AS MIDI
To save your file as MIDI first select MIDI file
from the save window and then choose file name.

SAVING AS WEB PAGE
You can also save your score as a web page that
can be viewed over the internet. This file
format is called Scorch. You will notice that 2
files (.htm and .sib)are created and these files
must be kept together
