Evolution of Technology

• Yesterday Old-style fumigation/carburetor
  systems (80s-90s vintage) were notorious for
  problems
• Less efficient
• Difficult to maintain
• Prone to backfiring, mechanical problems
• Lack of standards some conversion companies
  sold shoddy product looking to make a quick buck
• Today Computerized direct injection systems are
  much more reliable, better performance.

Benefits/Considerations

• Maintenance Costs
• Longer service life and maintenance intervals
  reported by fleets (compared with
  gasoline-powered vehicles)
• Favorably compare to 2007 diesels due to added
  diesel engine costs, added maintenance for
  particulate filters, requirements for ULSD fuel
• Propane tanks require periodic inspection
• Lower MPG, but lower fuel cost more than negates
  this
• Vehicle conversion adds cost but this is
  partially offset by federal tax credits on fuel,
  conversion and fuel station
• Environmental benefits over gasoline or diesel
  (including new diesel engines)
• 60 reduction in ozone-forming emissions
  (NOx/VOC) compared with reformulated gasoline
• Larger NOx reductions compared with new diesels
