POTS and Local Loops
  • POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service.
  • Bandwidth.
  • Telephone (300 to 3,400 Hz).
  • DSL (4312.5 Hz wide channels starting between
    10,000 and 100,000 Hz).
  • Digital, not analog data.

3
Different Types
  • Asymmetrical DSL (ADSL)
  • Very high bit-rate DSL (VDSL)
  • Symmetric DSL (SDSL)
  • Rate-Adaptive DSL (RADSL)

4
Asymmetrical DSL
  • ADSL is the type of DSL that favors the idea most
Internet users download more than they upload.

5
Types of ADSL
  • CAP
  • Voice conversations (0 to 4 kHz)
  • Upstream (25 to 160 kHz)
  • Downstream (240 kHz to 1.5 MHz)

6
Types of ADSL
  • DMT
  • 247 separate channels.
  • Each channel is 4 kHz wide.
  • Channel Monitoring and Shifting.

7
But Why Filters?
  • Low-Pass Filter
  • Called LP Filters for short.
  • Used for phone if ADSL is installed.
  • Block everything above 4 kHz.

8
DSL Transceiver
  • DSL Transceiver
  • Also called a DSL modem.
  • Point where the users computer connects to the
    DSL line.
  • Connects to computer via USB or 10 base-T
    Ethernet connection.

9
DSLAM
  • DSLAM will allow users to not see performance
decrease as new users are added. Here the voice
component gets separated from the upstream and
    the downstream.
