Addressing Obesity in VA
  • In response to the increasing obesity rates, the
    Virginia Department of Health created CHAMPION,
    with the intent to better equip communities
    throughout Virginia to decrease or eliminate
    obesity.

  • Goals
  • Reduction in prevalence and incidence of
    overweight and obesity levels among Virginians
    reached through increasing community-led
    interventions and programs.
  • Prevention and control of obesity and other
    related risk factors through Virginians making
    healthy food choices and increasing physical
    activity.

  • 2006 CHAMPION Meetings
  • Collected region-specific information
  • Gathered age-specific priorities
  • Over 900 Virginians participated in Regional and
    Issue-specific meetings

  • In 2006, Governor Kaine released the CHAMPION
    Report
  • After the release of the CHAMPION Report, began
    the process of developing an Obesity Plan to
    reach the needs identified during the Regional
    Meetings.

  • Released in May 2009
  • Tool to strengthen community efforts by
    providing
  • Recommended, evidence-based programs
  • Relatively inexpensive for communities to
    implement.
  • Identifies targeted actions and recommended
    strategies.

Year 1- BodyWorks
  • BodyWorks is designed to help parents of
    adolescents improve family eating and physical
    activity habits
  • Focuses on parents as role models and provides
    hands-on tools to make small, specific behavior
    changes
  • After the program, parents were more likely to
    set family nutrition and physical activity goals.

Year 1- Personal Empowerment Plan (PEP)
  • PEP is a strategy for work sites to promote
    healthy eating and moderate physical activity

    worksite wellness
