What is Situation Testing?
  • Situation Testing is a so called experimental
    research method, which investigates peoples
    acting in a real setting
  • A method which investigates the occurrence of
    discrimination.

Purpose of the study
  • Determine if and to which extent ethnic
    discrimination is present when recruiting.
  • Produce knowledge about how discrimination is
    present in connetion with recruiting.

Design of the study
  • The study will be implemented in three regions,
    with two ethnic categories Swedish and
    foreign background.
  • The study will be implemented with both women and
    men.
  • Different employers in various sectors, both
    private and public, will be included in the study.

How will the study be conducted?
  • Two testpersons will be followed in a real
    recruiting process.
  • The applicants shall be of the same age, gender
    and with similar personalities.
  • Only one aspect differs between the testpersons
    their ethnic background.
  • The application procedure will be done through
    written applications and/or telephone contacts.
  • Only publicly advertised positions will be
    applied for.
  • The testpersons shall preferably advance to an
    employment interview.

Methodological advantages and limitations
  • The method gives us an understandig of the
    concrete action, i.e., how people act in reality.
  • The method is developed to measure and give a
    statistically valid knowledge about the extent of
    discrimination.
  • In addition to measuring the presence of
    discrimination, it also reveals when in the
    recruiting process the discrimination has
    occured.
  • The method only measures the occurance of
    discrimination not why.
