Warfare!!!
  • SCALPING
  • Scalping is when the skin on the top of the
head is cut off with a knife and pulled back.
This usually led when there was a death on the
battlefield. The reason the tribes did this was
because it would give them fewer enemies in the
after life after reincarnation. Many people
thought this was extremely savage of the Indians.
  • This story is a prime example

  • Sitting Around The Camp Fire!
  • Now children Im going to tell u a little
story about great uncle tiger-wood! One day when
he was running in the field he came across a wild
buffalo, as he tried to fight it off with only
his own two hands, he suffered alone in the field
for a few days. Until a tribe took him in as a
slave among their tribe, when great uncle
tiger-wood refused to be a slave, they waited
until sunrise when they would scalp your great
uncle. (gasps) fortunately he managed to escape
with only half his head scalped! To day he is
known as the great warrior tiger-wood.
  • Now great uncle tiger wood is going to give
you his terrific story in his own words.

  • Uncle Tiger-woods view
  • I was out on the lookout for the buffalo,
when one ran up to me . It jumped on top of me, I
was TERRIYED, I didnt think Id survive!
  • A few days past, I didnt know where I was,
but I realised that my tribe had left me, I dont
blame them as they had to keep up with the
buffalo, otherwise they'd be in danger to. I
must have fallen asleep when I was awoke by
another Indian (. From another) tribe. They said
to me I could come back with them to there camp,
only if Id be a slave. I wouldnt stand for it,
so they said all they could do was scalp me.
  • I was scared, frightened, I didnt know
    what to do,
  • Fortunately I managed to escape with only
half my head scalped, I was in pain, blood was
    pouring down.
  • But I survived!!!!!!

Battle time!
  • In a battle the native Americans had
certain tactics that may seem cowardly to us, for
    example -
  • In a battle the native Americans would run away
(also known as a hit and run) to prevent
themselves from death or injuries when the tribe
desperately needed members to keep alive (e.g.
    men for hunting reproducing).
  • Horses were also stolen (horse raid), as they
came in handy for many reasons such as in a
battle where the horses would be used to keep up
with the buffalo , and to stop themselves being
    trampled on.
  • Women were also kidnapped as a result of them
marring the native Americans and reproducing
babies to stop the population dying!

Religion!
  • All Indians believed in the spirits that
bring good or evil to the tribe, part of their
    everyday life was religious worship.
  • Wakan tanka
  • The Indians believed that the sun, the
earth, the sky, the mountains, the animals, and
all the things around them were things that they
    should worship.
  • these spirits were controlled by wakan tanka
    (great mystery)

10
Ceremonies
  • It was important to the Indians to perform
many dances. They have a dance for everything.
  • Looking at the sun was the most sacred of
their ceremonies. For them taking part it was a
    great deal of pain.
  • this ceremony was done to make sure that the
power of the sun would come everyday for the rest
of their life. The tribe respected the ones who
took part very highly, as they wouldnt have
being able to take the pain.

11
Power of spirits!
  • A vision
    request
  • A vision request was when a teenage boy
wanted and tried to gain special power of a
spirit through going to what was called a vision
    request.
  • The boy would not eat for six whole days
and would do this on top of a hill, by doing this
his imagination became strong. This would then
make him dream and the life or animal that would
appear in his dream would then become for the
rest of his life a guardian spirit.

12
Medicine
  • The Sioux believed that other Indians were
good at dealing with special spirits. Each tribe
would nominate a man to be the medicine man, h
would then be in charge in all the ceremonies
that were to take place. If you are an older
person you would not be able to become a medicine
women only if they had magical abilities.
  • A medicine mans jobs included telling the
future and advice among the tribe cast spells and
    most importantly healing the sick.
