- What is a Digital-to-Analog Converter Box?
- A digital-to-analog (DTA) converter box is a
device that converts digital - television broadcast signals to analog signals.
- The U.S. is scheduled to shift to digital-only
TV broadcasts on February 17, 2009. The switch
is being made to provide consumers a clearer
picture and more programming options, while
simultaneously freeing up analog airwaves for
other uses, such as emergency response. - Who will need a DTA Converter Box?
- Consumers with analog TVs that receive
over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna, will
need a DTA in order to continue receiving
television broadcasts. - Consumers with analog TVs who subscribe to
cable or satellite services should have no
interruption in their service and do not need a
DTA. - Consumers with digital TVs do not need a DTA.
TVs manufactured after - March 1, 2007 are required to be digital TVs.

6DTA Converter Box Coupon Program
- The National Telecommunications and Information
Administration (NTIA), part of the U.S.
Department of Commerce, is offering coupons for
DTAs - U.S. households can obtain up to two coupons,
each worth 40, that can be - applied toward the cost of eligible converter
boxes. - A list of ENERGY STAR qualified models can be
found at - www.energystar.gov/products and a list of
participating retailers can be found at - www.dtv2009.gov.

7ENERGY STAR Qualified DTA Criteria
- ENERGY STAR qualified DTAs use over 50 percent
less energy than standard models and meet energy
efficiency requirements in both the On and Sleep
Modes - On Mode Qualified DTAs must use 8 watts of
energy or less - Sleep Mode Qualified DTAs must use 1 watt of
energy or less - Qualified DTAs must also be shipped with a
default Auto-Power Down setting - Auto-Power Down DTAs automatically switch from
the On Mode to - the Sleep Mode after a period of time without
user activity - The default Auto-Power Down setting is 4 hours
or less
