Welcome to Riverview Curriculum Night
  • Grade 6

Our goal to provide each student the
opportunity to meet all criteria needed to be
promoted to the seventh grade.
  • Pass all subject areas on the sixth grade report
    card.
  • Meet attendance requirements for Brevard
    County Schools.
  • Score at least a level two in reading on the 2009
    FCAT.

Our Curriculum is the Sunshine State Standards!
  • All texts are keyed to the individual subject
    standards.
  • Outside sources of material are used frequently.
  • Projects and demonstrations are encouraged as
    evidence of mastery.

Reading/Language Arts
  • Macmillan/McGraw-Treasures
  • Unit tests for units 1, 3, and 5 are used as
    benchmark tests.
  • Spelling and grammar lessons are keyed to the
    texts and reference the Sunshine State Standards.

Mathematics
  • MacMillan/McGraw Hill
  • Students are assessed by an inventory test, a
    November diagnostic, and February diagnostic
    test, and an end-of-year test.
  • Two workbooks are used one for daily practice
    and one for FCAT practice.

Science
  • Scott-Foresman
  • Workbooks are provided for review and practice.
  • Science Fair participation is a requirement.
    Sometime in November.
  • Hands-on experiences will be provided for the
    students.

Social Studies
  • Holt
  • Geography (Western Hemisphere), as a tool, is
    emphasized.
  • Map skills, historical perspective, and regional
    differences and similarities are explored.

Classroom Management
  • Step one verbal warning, card turns to blue.
  • Step two time out in classroom, card turns to
    yellow, note goes home.
  • Step three time out in another classroom, card
    turns to orange, student calls home.
  • Step four after school detention, card turns to
    red, student calls home.

Procedures and Routines
  • Riverview is learning procedures and routines.
  • These procedures and routines teach students
    responsibility.
  • Procedures and routines are simply how things are
    done, not rules to be broken.

Classroom Standards
  • Come to school on time, dressed in school
    uniform, and prepared for class.
  • Respect teachers, yourself, and others.
  • Raise your hand to be recognized, and wait until
    you are called upon to speak.
  • Follow directions the first time they are given.
  • Turn in all assignments on time.

Homework
  • Assignments not completed during class time are
    to be completed at home, and returned to school
    the next day.
  • Your child will have a homework packet given to
    them on Monday and is due Friday by 800 a.m.
  • Your child will have a reading log given to them
    on Monday and is due the following Monday by 800
    a.m. Your child should read every night even
    Saturday and Sunday for thirty minutes and record
    their times on the reading log.
  • Homework is assigned by the teachers to reinforce
    lessons taught during class time.
  • Parents, please check your students planner each
    day to see what needs to be done.

Student Planners
  • Each student will be expected to maintain a
    planner that has been provided by the school.
  • All assignments should be recorded for each
    school day.
  • The planner will be taken home each night.
  • It should be reviewed and signed by a parent.
  • It should be returned to school on the following
    day.

Dress Code
  • Students are expected to abide by the Riverview
    dress code.
  • Riverview has implemented school uniforms and
    students are required to wear them everyday.
    Blue, white, red polo shirts and khaki or blue
    shorts, pants or skirts. Each student should wear
    comfortable shoes they can run in everyday.

Activity Classes
  • Students attend activity classes from 810-850
    each day.
  • P.E-Monday wear shoes that can get dirty
    Art-Tuesday Music-Wednesday Media-Thursday
    Computers-Friday

Supervised Activity Time
  • Students engage in a variety of activities after
    lunch each day.
  • Health and safety issues are addressed during
    this time, also.

Field Trips
  • Kennedy Space Center-December 8, 2008No
    chaperones are needed at this time.
  • Various other trips are in the planning stage.
  • End of Year trip??????

Volunteers
  • Register with the school.
  • Sign in every time
  • Document work done outside of school in the
    notebook in the office
  • If you want to go on any up coming field trips
    you have to be registered in the computer as a
    volunteer. This process can take up to 6 weeks.

Student Led Conferences
  • This year your child will be the one who tells
    you how he or she is doing in class.
  • We asked for a 2 inch binder on the first day of
    school. This binder is going to be your childs
    portfolio.
  • In the portfolio your child is going to put his
    or her work and tests, to show you how they are
    progressing throughout the year.
  • The teacher will be there, but your child is
    going to lead the conference.
