Title: Mathematics

1
Mathematics
  • Scientific notation uses decimal fractions-6 1/2
    becomes 6.50
  • When you use scientific notation, round off to
the last two numbers following the decimal...
  • Example 6.23956 becomes--
  • 6.24

2
Mathematics--some of the rules
  • A number raised to a power, the exponent tells
you how many times a number is multiplied by
    itself
  • EXAMPLE 23 means 2 x 2 x 2 or 8
  • When multiplying numbers with exponents, you
multiply the numbers and add the exponents
  • (ax) (ay) axy

3
  • When dividing number with exponents, multiply the
    numbers, and subtract the exponents
  • (ax) / (ay) ax-y

4
Dance of the Decimals and Power Changes
  • If you move the decimal to the LEFT, you add the
corresponding movements to the power of
    10...Example...
  • 7,300,000.00 7.30 x 106

6 steps to the left
Therefore, add 6 to the power of ten... In this
case, 10 to the 6th
5
Ratios, Fractions, Proportions
  • A ratio is no more than comparison of two
entities such as numbers (synonyms fraction or
    proportion)
  • A fraction is by its own terminology, a part of a
whole. Can be represented as one number over the
    other...numerator over denominator...or as a
    decimal (synonyms ratio or proportion)

6
Ratios, Fractions, ProportionsPercentage
  • Proportion is no more than a ratio, or a
comparison of two numbers or entities (synonyms
    fraction and ratio)
  • Percentage is no more than a decimal fraction
multiplied by 100 equalling the percentage of
    the whole...
  • Example of percentage...1/2 0.5 x 100, which
    equals 50 (of the whole)

7
Algebra
  • The mathematics of logic
  • A step-by-step approach to problem solving
  • 2x 5 15 (to solve this, x must be left on
    its own...therefore
  • 2x 5 - (5) 15 - (5)...
  • 2x 10...
  • dividing both sides by 2, we get
  • x 5

8
Algebra...the things you need to remember
  • When an equals sign appears between the right and
left sides of the equation, whatever you do
(mathematically) to one side, you MUST do on the
    other
  • Algebra is nothing more than stating a logical
    argument,without words, using mathematics to
    problem solve...
  • This helps you develop your left brain function
