Title: Mr' Vincent Perez

1
Mr. Vincent Perez
  • Grade 6 Science
  • Room 223 and 225
  • Back to School Night
  • 2008-2009

2
Units of Study
  • Ecology
  • Classification
  • Matter and Measurement
  • Mixtures and Solutions
  • Atoms and Molecules
  • Heat and Energy
  • Electromagnetism
  • Light
  • Sound
  • Forces and Motion
  • Simple Machines

3
Calculation of Grades
  • Homework - 20
  • Tests - 35
  • Quizzes - 20
  • Labs and Projects - 20
  • School Island / Castle Learning - 5
  • The Final Exam will count as TWO test grades in
    the 4th Marking Period
  • Plagiarism and cheating on exams will result in a
    grade of zero
  • There are no retakes on any work

4
Homework Assignments
  • Homework will be assigned on a daily basis
  • Please check your childs Agenda Book every night
for homework assignments and future quizzes,
    tests, or labs
  • Why is homework assigned?
  • So the students can reinforce and apply the
concepts that were learned in class
  • So the students become familiar with the
vocabulary terms that are used in science
  • So the students will not have to study large
chunks of information the night before a quiz or
    test

5
Homework Grades
  • On time - Complete 100
  • On time - Incomplete 50
  • Assignments checked in class that were not
    completed at all 0
  • One day late but not checked in class 50
  • Homework that is more than 1 day late will
    receive a grade of 0
  • Students ALWAYS have homework. If homework is
not assigned, the students should review their
vocabulary terms or study their notes

6
Science Quizzes
  • Given once per week OR once every 2 weeks
  • The format will include a variety of
  • 1. Vocabulary Terms
  • 2. Matching
  • 3. Multiple Choice
  • 4. Fill in the blank / Word bank
  • 5. True / False
  • 6. Short Answer
  • Quizzes will usually be announced in advance
  • I try to give a weekends notice

7
Science Tests
  • Tests will be given at the end of every unit,
    usually every two weeks
  • Longer units will have a mid-test and an
end-of-unit test (to help lessen the amount of
material that the students need to study)
  • P.U.G.S. (Punctuation, Usage, Grammar, and
    Spelling).
  • If a word is listed in the question, or is listed
on the page, it should be spelled correctly in
    the students response
  • Test questions come from the notes, hand-outs,
    class discussions, and homework assignments

8
Science Labs
  • Science Labs are a fun way to learn about the
curriculum while using the Scientific Method
  • Students should use their notes when answering
    the questions on the lab
  • Labs should be made up during extra help
  • If labs are
  • 1 day late minus 15 points of actual grade
  • 2 days late minus 30 points of actual grade
  • More than 2 days late final grade of 30
(because the students get credit for their
participation in the lab by doing the experiment
    or collecting data)

9
Science Class Preparedness
  • Agenda Book
  • Science Binder (Although not encouraged, but may
    be shared with another subject)
  • THREE Sections (1-Class Notes, 2-Homework,
    3-Labs/Quizzes/Tests)
  • Pencil only and red pen for correcting work
  • Folder
  • All graded work must be signed by a parent
  • At the end of every unit, I will put the students
work in a folder wrapped with a rubber band
  • Please find a safe place at home for the folder.
It will be used in class as review for the Final
    Exam.

10
Absent Make-up Work
  • I will occasionally post the class notes on my
website so the students can view them at home
(larger print, pictures in color, etc.)
  • Missed work should be made up at home or during
    extra-help
  • Lab work must be made up during extra help within
a weeks time (because materials are stored away
in preparation for the next lab)
  • As a general rule, missed work should be turned
in 1 day after the student returns (but are
    handled on an individual basis)
  • If a student is not feeling well, he or she
should focus on recovering from his or her illness

11
How to Prepare for Science
  • Come in to class and prepare for the lesson
  • Pay attention in class
  • Review notes and vocabulary terms daily
  • Ask questions (especially if you dont
    understand)
  • Attend extra-help (and have a question to ask)
  • Study with a classmate
  • Dont read the notes . . . Study them!
  • How? Index cards are a great way to study
science definitions. Put the vocabulary word on
one side of the index card, and the definition on
    the other side

12
Contacting the Teacher
  • Phone (516) 644-4200 during school hours
  • Letter Please seal it in an envelope or staple
it, and send it to school with the student
  • Address it to Mr. V. Perez (Grade 6 Science)
  • Website www.bethpage.ws/jfk/vperez/
