The Tools of Geography Globes and Maps
Globes and Maps are important tools of geography.
Globes are the best models that we have of the
Earth, because the Earth and globes are both
spheres. A map is a drawing of a place. Unlike
globes, however, maps are flat. Because they are
flat, they cannot show the true shape of the
Earth. Globes and Maps are different and have
different uses.
5
Latitude
  • Imaginary lines that run east to west on a map or
    globe.
  • Latitude lines are also called parallels.
  • The Equator is the 0o latitude line.
  • Latitude lines never intersect.

6
Longitude
  • Imaginary lines that run north and south on a map
    or globe.
  • Longitude lines are also called meridians.
  • The Prime Meridian is the 0o longitude line.
  • Longitude lines intersect at the North South
    Poles.

7
History
Studying history helps you see the links between
the past and the present. Records of the past
are made by people who saw or took part in an
event. History places people and activities in
time. Studying immigration will help us better
understand the American culture.
8
Ellis Island
  • From the days of its first 13 colonies, the
United States has been a Nation of Immigrants.
  • Starting in 1820, U.S. immigrants grew from a
steady trickle to a swilling flood.
  • Most early immigrants to the United States
entered the country at New York City.
  • The Ellis Island immigration center in New York
    Harbor opened in 1892.
  • During the Next 30 Years, Ellis Island was the
first stop in America for at least 12 million
    newcomers.
  • Were your ancestors one of those 12 million
    newcomer?
