1Migration from Analogue to Digital
- What about Digital Radio?
?
2Our station has gone digital.
- Digital technology in the broadcasting house
- the migration is going on since ten years
- the state of migration is very diverse
- the new digital equipment is often less
professional than the old analogue - there is no way back
?
3Our station has gone digital.
- Digital technologies for broadcasting
- the technologies are there since almost 10 years
(DAB, DRM, Worldspace) - except for some European countries they have not
yet been introduced at a large scale due to lack
of low-cost receivers - only the strong initiative of some countries with
a large population (China, India) can trigger off
cheap digital radios
?
4The Digital Broadcasting House
Do you have a digital broadcasting house if you
use CD players?
CD
DAT
MiniDisc
What comes next?
?
5The Digital Broadcasting House
- There will be no new dedicated digital audio
technology any more! - In future all sound program production and
storage will depend on computer technologies.
?
6Digital Reporter Equipment
To take full advantage of computerized audio
editing facilities, the reporter equipment must
adapt to the new technologies.
7Digital Reporter Equipment
Flash recorders
- professional recorders
- good sound quality
- good integration into computerized production
environment - expensive recorders
- expensive storage media
- no big choice of recorders
8Digital Reporter Equipment
MP3 players have become popular at an incredibly
fast pace. Most MP3 players can also record!
- small and handy
- relatively cheap
- perfect integration into computerized production
environment - include an FM radio (or even DAB!)
- voice recording feature meant as notepad
- mostly no microphone input
- no manual level control
- no professional recorders available
- currently a difficult choice
9New Challenges New Opportunities
- New technologies require new production methods
- they are not just substitutes for analogue
technologies - New technologies offer opportunities for new
program formats - be creative, try new things
- (before others do it)
