3-2-1 Summary (post-reading)
  • What is it? This strategy requires students to
summarize key ideas from the text and encourage
them to think independently. First, students
write about three things they discovered. Next,
they write about two things they found
interesting. Last, they write one question they
still have. This strategy can be used while
reading a variety of texts to actively and
meaningfully engage student with the text.

Picture This! (Pre-Reading)
  • What is it? Picture This! Is a powerful method
for motivating students to use their visual
literacy skills to read and remember text.
Students see a projected image, discuss it, read
a text selection that explains the image, and
then connect their reading to a deeper discussion
and understanding of the projected image.

9
Write Around
  • What is it? In a Write Around, groups of
students write notes to each other about a rich,
complex topic. As they jot comments, pass their
papers, read what the previous student(s) wrote
and add their own remarks, students create a
string of conversation that replaces the
    ineffective whole-class, out-loud discussions.
