4After School A Time of Risk
- After School hours can be filled with risks
- 33 of Colorado students are unsupervised after
school - Single parent or dual earner families need more
quality and safe care for their children in the
out-of-school time hours - Educators and families are searching for ways to
attack drop out rates, truancy rates, poor
academic performance, and other risky behaviors
5Colorado Drop Out Rates
6Academic Performance
BUT - Challenges facing our youth are NOT just
going to be solved through schools
7After School A Time of Opportunity
- Research shows that after-school programs make a
difference in all these areas - After-school programs provide opportunities to
support and reinforce learning happening during
the day. - DPS longer-term participation in after-school
programming improved academic performance,
specifically higher CSAP score in math and
writing - LAs BEST after school program 20 less likely
to drop out - National study of 10th graders 5-19hrs per week
in extracurricular - 6xs less likely to drop out by their senior year
- 3xs less likely to be suspended in their
sophomore or senior year - 2xs less likely to be arrested by their senior
year - Elementary Middle school students who regularly
attended high-quality after-school programs
showed gains of 12-20 in math scores compared to
their peers who were routinely unsupervised
