Title: Data Tools for Synthesis

1
Data Tools for Synthesis
  • Harry Stern (UW)
  • Steve Williams (NCAR)
  • Dmitri Nechaev (USM)
  • Gleb Panteleev (IARC)
  • David Kicklighter (MBL)
  • Richard Lammers (UNH)
  • Larry Hamilton (UNH)
  • Florence Fetterer (NSIDC)

Example of data integration from CEOP
Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period

Data Tools for SynthesisShared Information
  • Dmitri and Gleb consumers of data and will
offer Arctic Ocean reanalysis data product, have
an interest in using data that is suitable for
    data assimilation
  • Richard Hydrology communitys Arctic RIMS site
has proved helpful to many investigators, can it
be useful for more SASS projects, or as model for
other data tools? Can do what ifs in a group
setting, easily. A framework for integration.
  • David has seen that if you can standardize
formats (e.g. VEMAP), it makes data much easier
for people to access and compare results. (But it
    is not always possible)
  • Harry is thinking ahead to offering SAT fields
to others , will now try to extend fields to 45
    deg more useful to hydrologists
  • Larry interested in how human dimension data
can be incorporated as a layer in arctic maps, so
can quickly test ideas regarding , e.g.,
    contaminant burdens and human populations

3
Data Tools for SynthesisConceptual or
Operational Approaches
  • Avoid loosing information by processing (by
    averaging, regridding, or other manipulation)
  • When possible, offer data (points, cells,
numbers) with std dev or estimate of error, with
time and space over which error was calculated
    included.
  • Please fill out the questionnaire, for strategic
planning purposes (May make us aware of other
products, and will show up the range in data that
    SASS projects will produce).
  • Add fields of wide interest to the ArcticRIMS
tool, including human dimensions data. (Daily,
or coarser, data in EASE-Grid 25 km, or by
    political units, such as counties)
  • NCAR and NSIDC data managers supporting NSF
projects will look at RIMS for features to
incorporate in tools were working on for other
    arctic projects
  • A combination of systems and/or distributed
archives may be the best solution for ARCSS

Now has political hierarchy.

Data Tools for SynthesisSome Possible Products
  • Harry Stern and others - SAT reconstructed
1979-present, daily, other products, monthly back
    to 1901. (100 or 25 km EASE-Grid. reconstructed,
and global SAT. down to 50 N, Globle, on 5 deg
    lat lon.
  • Andrey Proshutinsky, Jinlun Zhang, Dmitri
    Nechaev, Gleb Panteleev 3D oceanographic
fields with 25-50 km resolution product of
    ice/ocean data assimilation (reanalysis fields).
  • David Kicklighter and others Multiple
disturbance data sets, 1700-2006. Land use data
(row crops, pastures, timber harvest) with fire
disturbance added, gridded to ½ deg grid.
  • Probably others indicate on the questionnaire,
    please
  • Note different spatial and temporal resolutions
  • Format translators (provides flexibility not
everyone can use the same format)
  • Smart regridding tools
