Title: Pentateuch, Lect 14 Oct. 18
1Pentateuch, Lect 14Oct. 18
- Can You answer these questions?
- List the items outside and inside the tabernacle
and give their purpose and meaning. - What does atonement mean?
- What was the function of the High Priest on the
day of atonement? - What doers Yom Kippur mean?
- What significance might be seen in the location
of the mercy seat and the the ten commandments. - How can it be seen that Jesus is the fulfillment
of all the shadowy furniture in the Tabernacle? - What is the great tragedy that happened to the
priestly worship system by the time Jesus came?
2Disrespect for Worship as God Would Have it
Idolatry Emerges. Read Exodus 32-34
- Moses was forty days in Mt. receiving Gods Word.
- Aaron bows to pressure from the people to make a
golden calf. - Moses returns, in anger breaks the ten
commandments.. - LEARN WHEN GOD DECRIBES WORSHIP FOR HIMSELF, HE
CARES HOW IT IS DONE.
3- Nadab Abihu Lev. 101-2. 1. And Nadab and
Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his
censer, and put fire therein, and put incense
thereon, and offered strange fire before the
Lord, which he commanded them not. - 2. And there went out fire from the Lord, and
devoured them, and they died before the Lord. - 3. Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that
the Lord spake, saying, I will be sanctified in
them that come nigh me, and before all the people
I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace. - Cain, Gen. 4.
- What about us? Has this changed
4EX. 321. And when the people saw that Moses
delayed to come down out of the mount, the people
gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said
unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before
us for as for this Moses, the man that brought
us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what
is become of him. 2. And Aaron said unto them,
Break off the golden earrings, which are in the
ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your
daughters, and bring them unto me. 3. And all
the people brake off the golden earrings which
were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4. And he received them at their hand, and
fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had
made it a molten calf and they said, These be
thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of
the land of Egypt. 5. And when Aaron saw it,
he built an altar before it and Aaron made
proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to
the Lord. 6. And they rose up early on the
morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought
peace offerings and the people sat down to eat
and to drink, and rose up to play.
5Jesus on Vain Worship
- Matt. 15 8. This people draweth nigh unto me
with their mouth, and honoureth me with their
lips but their heart is far from me. - 9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for
doctrines the commandments of men.
6Apostle Paul on False Teaching
- Gal.16. I marvel that ye are so soon removed
from him that called you into the grace of Christ
unto another gospel - 7. Which is not another but there be some that
trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of
Christ. - 8. But though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that which
we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. - 9. As we said before, so say I now again, If
any man preach any other gospel unto you than
that ye have received, let him be accursed.
7Apostle John on False Teaching
- II John 10. If there come any unto you, and
bring not this doctrine, receive him not into
your house, neither bid him God speed - 11. For he that biddeth him God speed is
partaker of his evil deeds.
8Apostle Peter on False Teaching
- 1. But there were false prophets also among the
people, even as there shall be false teachers
among you, who privily shall bring in damnable
heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them,
and bring upon themselves swift destruction. - 2. And many shall follow their pernicious ways
by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil
spoken of. - 3. And through covetousness shall they with
feigned words make merchandise of you whose
judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and
their damnation slumbereth not.
9Idolatry (perverted worship) Leads to Immorality
Rom. 123. And changed the glory of the
uncorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted
beasts, and creeping things. 24. Wherefore God
also gave them up to uncleanness through the
lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own
bodies between themselves 25. Who changed the
truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and
served the creature more than the Creator, who is
blessed for ever. Amen. 26. For this cause God
gave them up unto vile affections for even their
women did change the natural use into that which
is against nature
10 27. And likewise also the men, leaving the
natural use of the woman, burned in their lust
one toward another men with men working that
which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves
that recompence of their error which was meet.
28. And even as they did not like to retain God
in their knowledge, God gave them over to a
reprobate mind, to do those things which are not
convenient 29. Being filled with all
unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness,
covetousness, maliciousness full of envy,
murder, debate, deceit, malignity whisperers,
30. Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful,
proud, boasters, inventors of evil things,
disobedient to parents, 31. Without
understanding, covenant breakers, without natural
affection, implacable, unmerciful 32. Who
knowing the judgment of God, that they which
commit such things are worthy of death, not only
do the same, but have pleasure in them that do
them.
11Two Essentiql Ingredients of Acceptable Worship
- John 424. God is a Spirit and they that
worship him must worship him in spirit and in
truth. - ---You cannot worship God acceptably in the
spirit and reject the truth of his word. Jno.
1717. - 17. Sanctify them through thy truth thy word
is truth. The early church used these true
Items of worship 1) Prayer 2) Exhortation 3)
Singing His Praise 4) Lords Supper 4) Giving
of means. - You cannot worship God acceptably in truth
without the spirit (I.e. formally w/o love of
the truth. - e.g., Rev. 2 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat
against thee, because thou hast left thy first
love. 5. Remember therefore from whence thou
art fallen, and repent, and do the first works
12The Priesthoodkohen..to draw near
- Pre-Levitical priests
- Levitical priests to 70 A.D.
- Priestly garments
- Their consecration
- Their service
- Spiritual meaning
13Pre-Levitical Priests
- Before Sinai individuals served as priests in
their own families and tribes. - Cain and Abel (Gen. 42-5)
- Noah (Gen. 820ff).
- Abraham (Gen. 2213-14)
- Jacob (Gen. 3154 351-8,14, 461)
- Melchizedek (Gen. 1418)
- Others (Ex. 1922)
14Levitical Priests to 70 A.D.
- At Sinai Israel was to be a kingdom of priestsa
holy nation (Ex. 19L5-6) - After they agreed to the covenant, they were to
ready themselves for God (Ex. 1910-15) - But when God planned to meet with them, they
trembled (Ex. 1916). - The oral law was given and they still feared,
asking Moses to speak to them (Ex. 2019-20).
From this time , until the written law was given
(Ex. 311834 for 2nd set) Moses served as their
priest.
15Aaron Levites Selected
- Atop Sinai Moses was told to select Aaron and his
sons to be priests. (Ex. 281) - Later the Levites were to be the intermediaries
for sinful people and be holy and righteous in
conduct. (Ex. 281) - God took the Levities (Of the 3rd son of Jacob by
Leah) in lieu of the first born (Ex. 13 who were
to be his after the deliverance of Israel from
Egypt (Nu. 311-13,40, 51 814)
16The priests became a revolting group. While
chosen to be pure and righteous in conduct, the
sons of Aaron polluted the worship before they
left Sinai and died for it (Lev. 10ff).
Subsequent generations further degraded the
office (I Sam. 212-17 27-29. Before Jerusalem
fell in 586, the prophets severely rebuked the
ungodliness of the priests. (Isaiah
Jeremiah) In the restoration era the priests
intermarried in violation of (Dt. 73-4 Ezra
1018). At the close of the old Testament,
Malachi denounced them harshly for their evil
(Mal. 16-8 21,2, 7,8) They were even worse in
the time of Christ becoming corrupt politicians
and turning the temple into a den of
thieves.(Mt. 2113) and finally condemning Jesus
an innocent man to death. Even Josephus makes
mention of their horrible unworthiness (Book 4,
Ch. 3, Par. 8)
17The Priestly Garments
- These are described in Ex. 28. Their making is
noted in 391ff). The High Priests garments was
of gold, blue, purple and scarlet and a fine
twined linen ephod, a sort of vest with two onyx
stones on each shoulder engraved with six tribes
on each. - A breastplate of judgment was made of the same
material with four rows of three precious stones
each according to the names of the sons of Israel
(Jacob) (Ex. 2821). The Urim (light) and
Thummin (perfection in truth) were in the
breastplate. Over a girdle was a blue sleeveless
robe with colored pomegranates on the skirt. He
wore a turban inscribed with Holy to the Lord.
The priests wore whiten linen breeches, girdles,
caps and coat. (Ex. 2840ff).
18Their Consecration
- Ex. 29. Took 7 days. The ceremony is recorded in
Lev. 8. After washing they dressed in their
garments and were anointed by Moses with oil. A
drop of blood from the Ram of ordination was
placed on the tip of their right ear, right
thumb, right big toe. They also offered burnt
offerings of a bull, a wave offering of the
insides of the Ram, then burning the same (Lev.
8).
19Their Service
- Daily duties..Morning and evening they offered a
lamb one year old with meal, oil and wine (Ex.
2938ff). They performed their daily duties in
the holy place keeping the light and incense
burning. The officiated in various sin offerings.
(Lev. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7) - The high priest was in charge of the priests and
officiated on the day of atonement (Lev. 16)
annually entering alone into the holy of holies
for himself and the people. He consulted the
urim and thummin on important decisions (Nu.
1721, I Sam. 307)
20Spiritual Application
- 1. As a minister of others who drew near to God
he was to be godly in life. - 2. Constantly killing the innocent animal for
guilty man should have impressed upon him how
much God hated sin but loved the sinner, and how
great Gods grace was. - 3. His consecration and the areas to which blood
was applied should have made him understand what
the holiness and sanctity of his life should be. - 4. He should have understood that all he did had
a spiritual forecast of deliverance in a person. - Today, Christians are priests. (I Pet. 29 Rev.
16)
21Christians as Priests
- We should avoid the sins of the old priests.
- As priests we should ask ourselves some deep
questions Do we become tired and bored with the
mere ritual of signing, the Lords supper,
praying, giving of our means, time, energy and
study? - Do we use the repeated worship services to draw
nearer to God and make us more like Christ?. Let
us be careful not to let the means become the
end. Worship, Bible Study, even this class,
should be thought of as stepping stones to
achieve a more Christ like personality. Only in
doing this can we be true priests of God. Jesus
is our H. Priest. - I what way should priests be conscious of the
clothing they wear?
