YA lit and the classics
Bushman and Haas use YA Lit to help students make
an initial connection to literature. The goal is
help students move from the emotional level to
the intellectual level (96). YA books dont
replace the classics, but they offer protagonists
ands settings with which students can more
readily identify, so teachers dont have to spend
as much time helping students make those initial
connections. Hence, they say, the classics are
no longer the only quality literature and the
only works that teachers can use to teach
composition and literature skills (97).
Respond to BH on this issue. (What comp lit
skills do we teach through novels? Is that why
we teach classics anyway?)
3
Writing is too often used to respond to
questions that check comprehension, rather than
using the reading to inspire original,
thought-provoking essays. The traditional use of
writing does not encourage response with the
literature because the intent of most anthologies
seems to be to emphasize the right
interpretation.

Too much analysis Kids hate books/reading
Too little analysis Kids miss target skills

With one of your book club books, have one group
member read the first page (or first couple of
pages, if the first page is really short) aloud.
Other group members should monitor their
responses to the reading, focusing on specific
textual clues specific words and phrases that
suggest the target audience for this book. Make a
list of some specific words and phrases that
suggest a particular target audience, then write
a sentence or two explaining your reasoning.
Discuss your clues and reasons with other members
of the group. As a group, write a paragraph in
which you explain how the first page or two
offers clues about the identity (or demographics)
of the books target audience.
Reading skills finding textual evidence, drawing
conclusions Writing skills making claims, using
specific evidence to support claims,
explaining connections between evidence and claims

Dear CGC Faculty,   As you are probably aware, a
Citadel email account is issued to all students
when they register. Instructions are provided to
CGC students about how to access their Citadel
email accounts and how to pop their Citadel
email to personal email accounts if they so
desire. Mass email distribution lists, including
class email lists are generated using the Citadel
email accounts. CGC often communicates with all
CGC students to relay important information. One
such communication that will soon go out to CGC
students regards a new state law that requires
proof of legal US presence for all enrolled
students. Another is critical graduation
information concerning May commencement. We are
finding that a lot of CGC students are not
checking their Citadel email accounts or have not
set up their Citadel email accounts to pop to
their personal email accounts, thus missing any
communication that is sent.   We are asking for
your help. It is vital that CGC students receive
this important communication about the new state
law, as well as other critical information that
is sent. Can you please make an announcement in
your next CGC class that students check their
Citadel email accounts on a regular basis? If a
student needs information about how to access
their Citadel email account or information about
how to pop the emails to their personal email
accounts, please direct them to the CGC
(953-5089) and we will be happy to assist them.
  Thank you for your assistance!
