Title: Advanced Navigation Research in a Helicopter Training Program

1
Advanced Navigation Research in a Helicopter
Training Program
  • Primary Researcher Leslie Martin
  • Research Assistant Amanda Kolling

2
Purpose of the Study
  • Determine how accurately pilots can fly PVFR
routes by collecting real-time flight data on the
campus of UND with the various factors
    considered
  • Degree of turn
  • Leg lengths
  • Flight Conditions VFR, MVFR, IFR, and winds
  • Aircraft Equipment

3
UND Provides the Necessary Environment
  • Total of Seven Helicopters
  • Two Bell 206 Jet Rangers equipped with Garmin
    480s
  • Five Schweitzer 300s equipped with Garmin 430s
  • Varying degree of pilot experience from Student
Pilots to Commercial Pilots to CFIs

4
300s
206s
5
Cockpits
  • 300s
  • 206s

6
ADS-B
  • Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast
  • Two antennas in ND Grand Forks and Devils Lake
  • All of the helicopters are ADS-B equipped

7
Study Design
  • Series of routes have been created for transition
to and from the helicopter practice areas that
    surround the GFK Airport
  • ADS-B, CRABS, and Targets will be used to collect
    data
  • Pilots will fly the various routes with GPS
    serving as primary guidance
  • Questionnaires completed by the pilots will be
    used to determine the following
  • Pilot experience level
  • Flight Conditions Night, Day, VFR, MVFR, and
    simulated IFR
  • Deviations from routes caused by ATC

  • The following is one of the routes that have been
created, tested, and loaded into the GPS databases

DepartureArrival
NNOT TO SCALE
9
Data Sheet
  • Filled out by the pilots after each flight
  • Lets us know if they flew a Departure or Arrival
and if so, which one, along with other pertinent
    information
  • This information is collected weekly

10
CRABS
  • Comprehensive Real-time Analysis Broadcast System
  • Software that enables us to capture and record
flight data of all ADS-B equipped aircraft

11
CRABS Extracted Tracks
12
Targets
  • Importing data from CRABS into Targets to find
out the amount of deviations that occur

13
Current Status of Project
  • Pilots are flying the routes whenever possible on
    their flights
  • They turn in a questionnaire after every flight
that contains data appropriate to the route they
    flew
  • The questionnaires are then compared to the data
    recorded by CRABS

14
Current Status of Project
  • The CRABS data is imported to Targets
  • Deviations are being measured and recorded into
    an excel spreadsheet
