Field Experience Focus
  • To acquaint teacher candidates with the
    TEACHING and LEARNING issues of P-12 students in
    public schools who do not speak English as a
    first language
  • To sensitize teacher candidates to the
    cultural, economic, social impact on P-12
    students who do not speak English but live in an
    English speaking environment.

Field Experience Facts
  • 15 hour Field Experience in a public school
  • 2-3 hours per week for a minimum of 5 weeks up to
    maximum of 8 weeks.
  • May be assigned to a classroom teacher whose
    class has several ELL students.
  • OR
  • May be assigned to an ESOL teacher.
  • Cant get paid for FX hours.
  • Cant count FX for any other class.
  • First visit in the classroom should be an
    observation.
  • After the initial visit, you and your CT will
    work out a visitation schedule.
  • Must pass the FX to pass the class.
  • Notify your CT and your instructor if you drop
    the class.

Criminal History and Insurance
  • Must have clear criminal history and one million
    dollars of liability insurance to be eligible for
    participation in the field experience.
  • If EDUC 2120 is the first education course with a
    FX you have taken at KSU, you must
  • Come to the Office of Field Experiences and pick
    up
  • -an Instruction Sheet
  • -a Yellow Consent/Affirmation Form
  • -a green Verification of Liability
    Insurance Form
  • -Follow the directions for completing
    each
  • If you need to complete the above, and are also
    taking EDUC 2110 , follow the directions in EDUC
    2110.

Field Experience Design
  • Teacher candidates must be actively engaged in
    learning activities with English Language
    Learners (ELLs) most of the time.
  • First Visit should be an Observation.

Placement Arrangements
  • See Janice Traylor in the Office of Field
    Experiences, Kennesaw Hall, Room 3221 TODAY if
  • (1) You are a full-time or part-time parapro or
    an ASP worker in a public school and would like
    to complete your FX at that school.
  • (2) You live outside KSUs nine partnership
    districts and would like to complete your FX in a
    school close to your home.

How do I sign up for a school?
  • View on-line NOW the list of schools available.
  • Schools will be listed with Mapquest
    links.
  • Go to bcoe.kennesaw.edu/2120
  • Plan several choices of schools (they may fill
    quickly!)
  • Sign-up goes live at 1000 pm on January 27.
    Closes at 1000 am on January 29.
  • Can change your mind as much as you like, but you
    will always GET the last school you signed up
    for.
  • NO CHANGES or ADDITIONS after sign-up closes.
  • You need your ID to sign up
  • Print your confirmation
  • PLACEMENTS ARE FIRST COMEFIRST SERVED!

  • Enter your KSU and personal information (e.g.
    email, phone number, address, etc.)
  • Verify your liability insurance
  • Select a school

ORIENTATION at MY SCHOOL
  • If your placement school is planning a
    face-to-face orientation on their schools
    campus,
  • 1. the date (Feb 13 or Feb 20) and time
    will be noted on the
  • sign-up next to the name of the
    school.
  • 2. the Orientation is mandatory for you.
  • At the Orientation Session, the school will
  • Give you the name and contact information
    for your Collaborating Teacher
  • OR
  • indicate that the school will email to you
    the name and contact information of your CT
    within a few days.

No Orientation at my school?
  • If your school is not planning an orientation on
    their campus,
  • 1. Email will appear on the sign-up list
  • next to the name of the school.
  • 2. The school will email you via your
  • KSU email address the name and
  • contact information for your CT.

What do I do if I dont hear from the school?
  • 1. Dont contact the school until 5 or so
    days have passed since you should have received
    communication from the school.
  • 2. Call the school. Be extremely polite. Ask
    the receptionist which administrator is in charge
    of placing students for field experiences. Ask to
    speak to this person. (Write down the name.)
  • 3. Continuing to be very polite, explain that
    you have not received your placement information.
    If you leave a messageleave your email address
    and phone .
  • 4. If you do not hear from the administrator
    in charge of FX placements in the school within a
    couple of days of your call, email
    jtraylo2_at_kennesaw.edu for MG and HS placements,
    sthompso_at_kennesaw.edu for ES placements.
  • Try to resolve the problem yourself before you
    ask for help.

Whats Next?
  • Once you have the CTs contact information, it is
    your responsibility to contact the CT and set up
    a day and time for your first visit.
  • The first visit should be a two-hour observation

What if the teacher does not call (email me) back?
  • 1. Keep trying for a couple of days.
  • 2. Call the school and very, very politely ask
    the receptionist to leave a message for the
    teacher. Wait a couple more days.
  • Email jtraylo2_at_kennesaw.edu for MG and HS
    placements, sthompso_at_kennesaw.edu for ES
    placements.
  • Again, try to resolve the issue yourself before
    asking for help.

First Visit
  • Download, print and take to your placement school
    a copy of the Collaborating Teacher Packet.
    Go to www.kennesaw.edu/education/ofe, click on
    EDUC 2120, scroll and print.
  • Fill out your contact information on the top of
    the Contract Form. Put the CT packet in a
    folder. Give this to your CT on orientation day
    if you meet him/her. If not, hold until your
    first visit in the classroom with your CT.
  • Read the entire packet yourself before your first
    visit to the classroom.

Theres no crying in EDUC 2120
  • If you dont sign up, you will need to drop the
    class.
  • No swapping schools or systems.
  • Long drives happen.
  • Many, many students have childcare issues or some
    other issue.
  • Plan--take care of yourself and make your
    placement work.
  • Resolve issues professionally yourself. Dont
    expect someone else to fix your situation.
  • Be low maintenance. Part of professionalism!
