Title: Earths Structure

1
Earths Structure
  • The composition of the Earth

2
Structure
  • There are three basic parts to the Earths
    structure
  • They include
  • Crust
  • Mantle
  • Core

3
Crust
  • The crust is the outermost layer of the Earth
  • It is approximately 8km deep
  • There are two types of crust
  • Continental crust is the land that we live on
  • Oceanic crust is what exists at the bottom of the
    ocean
  • Continental crust is less dense than oceanic
crust, this is why dry land exists

4
Mantle
  • The mantle is the layer directly below the crust
  • It is made of iron and other minerals
  • It is broken up into the upper and lower mantle
  • Convection currents occur in this layer which are
the cause of the movement of the crust
  • The mantle is also one of the two parts that is
responsible for the Earths magnetic field

5
Core
  • This is the innermost part of the Earth
  • It also consists of Iron and other elements
  • The core is the hottest and most dense portion of
    the Earth
  • It is also partially responsible for the Earths
    magnetic field
  • It creates the hot spots in the mantle that drive
    the convection currents
