Title: Developing Resources for Schemes of Work

1
  • Developing Resources for Schemes of Work

2
  • Activity 1
  • Find the National Curriculum Web Site
  • Add this to the Favourites (Explorer)or
    Bookmarks(Netscape) for future reference
  • Copy (CtrlC) and Paste (CtrlV) these into MS
    Word
  • Select (Copy-Paste) onto a new page those items
from the Attainment Targets appropriate to your
    chosen topic

3
  • What are the Internet and World Wide Web?
  • The Internet is a cooperatively run global
collection of computer networks with a common
    addressing system
  • The World Wide Web (WWW) is the graphical user
    interface of the internet
  • Currently unregulated, rapidly commercialising,
    and accessible to the public

4
  • The WWW in the Secondary Curriculum
  • Used by teacher at home or school as a source of
information for lesson content or worksheets or
    for information from educational organisations
  • Used by teacher at school for showing during
lesson via a monitor or data projector
  • Used by all or some pupils for a whole or part of
a lesson for a structured task or investigation
(caution how do you avoid net surfing or the
possibility of access to undesirable material?)
  • Used by pupils at home or school for a homework
    task in their own time
  • (caution how can you detect plagiarism?)

5
  • Activity 2
  • For general information on a broad topic try a
directory or index based search (e.g.Yahoo)
  • For very specific information such as titles,
phrases or images try a search engine (e.g.Alta
    Vista)
  • Now learn more about how search engines work at
    Search Engine Watch
  • The following slides highlight some of the key
    points from this site

6
  • How search engines work
  • Most search engines use programmes which
automatically run through all the text of pages
on the web (except stop words such as the) to
find matches to your keywords or phrases
  • Some (e.g.Yahoo) use a system of classifying and
    indexing submitted pages
  • Some look for Metatags inserted in the html
    code
  • My Worldname"description" content"Everything you wanted
to know about stamps, from prices to
history."stamp collecting, stamp history, prices, stamps
    for sale"
  • Hybrid engines (most) use various combinations of
    the above

7
  • How search engines rank pages
  • Location of keywords on page primarily in the
    title, subtitle or opening paragraph
  • Frequency of occurrence of keywords
  • note, however, that the search engine will
automatically penalise or reject a site or page
using spamming techniques such as deliberate
flooding with strategic keywords to improve
    ranking
  • Location/frequency may be augmented by the use of
    other criteria, most notably
  • Metatags - predefined description and keywords
  • Link popularity - number of hyperlinks directed
    to the site
  • Reviews - existence, volume or quality of site
    reviews

8
  • Search tips from Alta Vista
  • In general, you should always try a natural
    language (keywords) query first
  • If you need to narrow down the result use Boolean
    Logic (see module2.8), especially -
  • The search techniques on the following slides are
taken from the Alta Vista menu. While most can be
used with other search engines, there are some
variations which you can find listed at
  • http//www.searchenginewatch.com/facts/ataglance.

  • Now try this (activity 2.8) using a worldwide
    search
  • Imagine that you want a recipe for oatmeal raisin
    cookies. Try
  • oatmeal raisin cookie
  • (the search engine will find pages with an
occurrence of any one of these words note the
    number of pages)
  • oatmeal raisin cookie
  • (the search engine will only find pages with an
occurrence of all three words note the number
    of pages)
  • oatmeal raisin cookie nuts
  • (someone in the family has a nut allergy, so
those recipes with nuts are eliminated note the
    number of pages)

13
  • Activity 2.9
  • Try a search of your own. If you prefer this to
be UK based (as often in education), Alta Vista
allows you to click a radio button to specify
this otherwise, you could specify domainuk
  • note the results on the module 2.9 form

14
  • Activities 3 and 4
  • Activity 3 requires you to locate resources
using the Encarta CD (note that some schools have
    this installed on their network)
  • Activity 4 asks you to look at some specialised
    education web sites
  • Step 2 show you how to add these to your
    Favourites and classify in folders
  • Step 3 shows how to create a references page

15
Activity 4, Step 3
  • Use image_ _ _ to search for sites with only
    images of your chosen subject
  • Use the listed site descriptions to find the most
appropriate site. Many (left) have thumbnail
collections which allow you to choose
  • Double click on the thumbnail to open up a full
    size version of the image

16
  • To download an image right click on the image to
    get the on screen menu
  • Click Save Picture As..
  • Browse to the location where you would like your
image saved and follow the default to save as
either a jpg or gif file which you can use in a
web page or in a Word or Publisher document

17
  • Issues of Internet/Web Security
  • There are a number of ways in which adult
material or other undesirable material (such as
    those advocating hatred, bigotry, violence,
gambling, etc.) can be filtered out, mainly
  • Screening by the ISP or Proxy-Server (e.g. RMs
    EduWeb)
  • Local server monitoring of the log of sites
visited or the screening of site addresses as the
    basis for denying access
  • Client software on local computers to either
screen user input or filter out self-certificated
sites through a PICS rating on individual site
    metatags
  • Source material protected by password or adult
    verification service (usually meaning user
provision of a credit card number)
  • Establishing a school code of practice (ground
rules can be effective to a point) and ensuring
    personal supervision where possible

18
  • Further Activities
  • Continue to locate useful resources for your
subject and save them in the Favourites folder
  • Try evaluating the site using the module 2.19
evaluation form which prompts you to consider the
    authenticity of web site information
  • Ask your school IT coordinator how about what
system the school has to filter out undesirable
    web sources
  • Try to share web site information within your
method group so that you can compile a mutually
beneficial list (-set up a group mailing list)
