Females lay about 100 eggs in their lifetime.
Eggs are very tiny, almost invisible.
Some lay eggs in clusters.
Some lay individual eggs on different plants.
Eggs are laid on leaves the insects will eat
after hatching.
It usually takes about 10 days for eggs to hatch.
Some butterflies remain as eggs all winter
hatching when warm weather arrives.

This is the caterpillar stage.
It eats the shell of its egg.
It eats only plants.
The caterpillar is a nocturnal feeder.
Half of it is stomach.
A caterpillar is always hungry and never stops
eating.
It has the ability to shed its skin.
This stage averages three to four weeks.
Then the caterpillar makes a hard covering for
itself.

PUPA

Another name for this stage is the chrysalis.
Inside the covering, the pupa slowly changes.
Most remain in this stage for one to two weeks.
Some might remain in this stage for a year or
more.
Pupa are practically helpless.
They are always brown, gray, or green.
Their defense is to blend in with their
surroundings.

The butterfly hangs upside down when it emerges
to harden its wings.
It immediately sends liquids to the veins in the
wings.
The butterfly flies away after the wings dry.
A butterfly eats only liquids.
The adult stage lasts about one year.
