4
Make a Personal Connection
  • Can students relate to the topic?
  • Is the topic already meaningful to students?
  • Librarian or teacher as matchmaker

5
UWEC Students Say
  • There were little things in the collection I
could relate to. I noticed as I drove home from
Thanksgiving this past week, I realized how far
Oxford was from Eau Claire. I never really paid
attention before. Overall, I think archival
material inspires creativity and yearn for
    knowledge.

6
Small is Beautiful!
  • What makes a historical subject or event
    important
  • Big topic
  • Overwhelming number of sources / Not enough
    sources
  • Inability to find ones own opinion on the topic
  • Many other students working on same topic

7
Small is Beautiful!
  • Small topic
  • Manageable number of sources
  • Ability to work with archival collections
  • Often contain connections for students
  • Personal connection
  • Connections to the big topics
  • Student becomes the expert

8
UWEC Students Say
  • By looking at the smaller stories of
individuals one can put the pieces together to
understand and see the bigger picture.
  • Studying manuscriptsmakes the material more
real or personable because of the emotional
aspects. It creates more of a personal
    connection for us as students.

9
Book em, Danno!
  • Journal articles are
  • Short
  • More likely to be online
  • Journal articles are also
  • Confusing to students
  • Not the dominant genre in history

10
Book em, Danno!
  • Books are
  • More explicit in historical argumentation
  • Long, but may be skimmed
  • Rich with bibliographical entries for related
    primary and secondary sources

11
UWEC History Faculty say.
  • A recent award-winning senior capstone paper had
the following numbers of secondary source
    citations
  • Books 11
  • Web sites 3
  • Theses 2
  • Government documents 2
  • Journal articles 1

12
Find a Voice
  • Answering the so what question
  • Has it all been said before?

13
UWEC Students Say
  • The value of using archival materials to me
is to be able to see, touch, and read primary
source material, and interpret it on my own. ()
I am able to come to my own conclusions.
  • I found myself understanding many concepts
that I had read about in class to a much deeper
    extent.
