2
Mid-South Pain Survey Background
3
Why Did ACS Do a Survey
  • 90 of cancer patients report pain as part of
    their disease
  • Of that number, 70 report their pain is not
    adequately controlled
  • 50 of those cancer patients whose pain is not
controlled report that they receive no pain
    treatment at all
  • Pain can persist long after the cancer has been
    treated
  • There is national data on pain and cancer, but no
    state specific or regional data.

4
Why is cancer pain so undertreated?
  • Provider issues
  • Patient issues
  • Family issues
  • Legal issues
  • Public perception

5
Purpose of the Survey
  • Determine barriers and perceptions of pain
    management
  • Evaluate current medical practice of pain
    management
  • Evaluate regulatory impact on pain management
  • Provide data to states to plan public awareness,
    provider education, and advocacy campaigns

6
