Title: GCI Overview

GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI)
  • Provides core capabilities that allow GEO
member-nominated systems, data and products to be
discovered, understood, and accessed by users and
    a variety of decision-support applications
  • The GCI includes several core information
registries, a common search facility known as
Clearinghouse, and GEO Web Portals that provide
a user interface to search and access all GEOSS
    resources.
  • An Initial Operating Capability (IOC) was
declared in July 2008 for the GCI.
  • IOC Task Force was convened to assess and
formalize the requirements of the GCI and to make
    recommendations to the Executive Committee
    regarding operational and administrative issues
    related to a sustainable GCI.

Component Resource Types Registered in CSR
  • Majority of offered Components are really
    websites
  • A growing minority are exposing registered Web
    services

5
What/Who is GEOSS For? (from D Nebert)
  • The current pattern of registration of Component
Systems and Services suggests still early stages
    of an organized system-of-systems construct
  • Organizations appear to view GEOSS primarily as
an advertising medium to other organizations --
a list, register, means to be counted present
  • The current style of resource (i.e. websites and
portals) that is registered is more amenable to
casual users (Barbs mother) than the envisioned
    solution-space.
  • If GEOSS is
  • primarily viewed as a directory service, then we
    have reached that goal
  • expected to rapidly enable decision-support
solutions, there is a way to go
  • expected to answer EO questions directly, much
more work and design is needed

6
Using the GCI
  • WGISS agencies have vast data and services that
    are available to international users
  • How does the user discover the resources?
  • How does the user search for specific data?
  • How does the user visualize access the data?
  • Current GCI can support selective decision
support systems and EO science application
users if you know what is behind the curtain
see the canned AIP demos from last weeks GEO ADC
    meeting
  • But what about everyone else?
