ABCs of Culture Comparison Project
Enduring Understanding Understanding common
elements of culture helps us see our similarities
and interdependence with other cultures.
Essential
Question Why are cultures often so similar, and
yet so different?
Now that you have an understanding of the common
elements of culture, you are going to do a little
real-world comparison and see for yourselves the
differences and similarities in three different
cultures. You will also analyze why those
similarities and differences exist.

• Your job
• You will be assigned an element of culture (one
  of the ABCs of Culture).
• You need to find out what your element of culture
  looks like in three different countries (not the
  U.S.). You must find/make a picture for each
  example and write one well-written paragraph
  about how that element of culture works in that
  country.
• You must also explain what your element of
  culture means, and develop a list of six words
  associated with your element of culture around
  the world.
• At the end, answer these questions in two
  paragraphs
• -Paragraph 1 What are the similarities you see
  between countries and why do those similarities
  exist? Give at least 2 good reasons why.
• - Paragraph 2 What are the differences you see
  between countries and why do those similarities
  exist? Give at least 2 good reasons why.

You may present your information on a poster,
booklet, or powerpoint slides. Use the attached
organizer to help you with gathering your
information.

• You are being assessed using the IB Humanities
  Assessment Criterion A, which asks
• Are you using the terms of the elements of
  culture appropriately and are you providing many
  facts and examples in your descriptions?
• Are your descriptions of your elements of culture
  detailed, accurate, and fully developed?
