What we did
  • Interviews with 23 Road Safety Officers
  • Contacted over 60 schools, colleges and youth
groups to identify 12 case studies
  • In 11 schools and 1 youth group
  • Focus groups with young people
  • Interviews with teachers
  • Interviews with national stakeholders

5
The context
  • Educating young people a priority
  • Road Safety Framework for 2010 to 2020
  • Road safety education taught within PSE
  • Small part of subject
  • Unexamined topic
  • Practice varies considerably
  • Few schools have comprehensive programmes
  • Little road safety education taught
  • Not always seen as relevant

6
What we found distribution and promotion
  • Distributed by Road Safety Units
  • RSOs positive about RSS training
  • Confident all mainstream schools received
  • Personally delivered - with training
  • Training useful but not always reaching right
    staff
  • Some gaps - special schools, colleges and youth
    groups
  • Little promotion of the Crash Magnets website

7
What we found distribution and promotion
  • East Dunbartonshire training
  • Training for Heads of Guidance in 2006
  • Training for wider guidance staff 2006/07
  • Visiting schools with staff changes in 2007/08
  • Fife support for Special Education Units
  • One to one support for special education units
  • West Lothian promotion
  • Online version available at annual event for
    pupils and teachers

8
What we found uptake and use
  • Over half of 60 schools contacted had used
  • Selected 11 who used currently and 1 in the
    past
  • 11 had used DVD
  • 6 had used other activities
  • 1 had used online version
  • Almost always used in PSE
  • Between 2 and 8 hours
  • 2 had used in cross curricular way

9
What we found - opinions
  • Innovative, interactive and flexible
  • Content and topics appropriate
  • Memorable for pupils
  • Activities prompt discussion
  • Varied views on DVD
  • Real life case studies good
  • Split views on use of cartoons
  • More suitable for younger age group

10
What we found opinions
  • The real life situations are really good as they
make you realise what could happen to you.
  • (S3 pupil, female)
  • There was this mum interviewed about losing her
son and she was struggling not to greet. She was
talking about the experience of losing her son
    it was quite sad.
    (S3 pupil,
    male)

11
What we found - opinions
  • Its more kiddie its not for us.
  • (S4 pupil, male)
  • Im not sure we can take Crash Magnets
    seriously.
  • (S3 pupil, female)
  • Its all relevant, but its the way its been
    put across....
  • (S5 pupil, female)

12
What we recommended
  • Crash Magnets should be kept
  • Valuable but not yet been used to its full
    potential
  • Crash Magnets should be enhanced
  • Teacher notes, coding activities, contents page
  • New DVD same messages but different
    presentation
  • Crash Magnets should be promoted
  • Opportunities to link to other activities and
    organisations
  • Use with young people with additional support
    needs
  • Re-launch including focus on online resource
