2Climate change scenarios anthropogenic forcing
3Geopolitical economical opportunities for
industrial countries
4Subsistence activities on the edge
5Climate change influence on Arctic indigenous
peoples livelihood Case studies on economic gain
and/or loss from northern Fennoscandia and
Greenland
6Arctic indigenous people are economically
effected by climate change
- Study aims to quantify the economic gain and/or
loss of native Arctic people and the effort to
hold their current living standards for the next
20 years - Development of sustainability indicators for
qualified information of how economic
development in the Arctic has been sustainable in
the past. - Development of welfare measures to provide
assessment of negative/positive climate change
effects. - Reflections on climate change and the
consequences for future access to Arctic natural
resources. - Modelling of different climate change scenarios
for a better understanding of climate feedback
mechanisms the Arctic indigenous peoples have
possibly to deal with.
7The Inuit of Greenland
- Canada, Greenland and Alaska
150.000 people - Main activities fishing, seal hunting
- Investigation of biotopes resilience and species
identification in the past/present. - Future impact on seals and fish stocks, potential
alternative income sources?
8The Sami of northern Fennoscandia
- Sami population in Norway, Sweden, Finland and
Russia ? 60-70.000 people - Primary industrial activity is reindeer husbandry
- - combined with other income sources
- Reindeer herding strongly dependant on seasonal
pasture - need for understanding of vulnerability
to climate change - - migration routes (permafrost
dependant) - - forage availability (/-)
- - forest expansion and decreasing fell
areal - - climate effect on the prevalence of
insects
9Budget time plan
10Deliverables outreach
- Potential publications will be submitted to
international peer-review journals like Journal
of Socio-economics, Population and Development
Review, Polar Record, Global Environmental
Change, and Climate Change. - Results of the project presented at two
international conferences (EGU, 2013) - A series of popular science talks in cooperation
with the Inuit Circumpolar Council
(www.inuit.org) and the Saami council
(www.saamicouncil .net). - A documentary on the fieldwork and on-site data
collection from a cinematography student will be
presented at these occasions.
