• Cities Grow and Change

Industrialization Changes Cities

• Industrialization was occurring in America in
  late 1800s
• It changed where people lived
• More people move into cities (why?)
• Good transportation and plentiful job
  opportunities
• Urbanization Growth of cities that resulted
  from these new changes

Technology changes city life

• 1. Elevators made it possible to utilize tall
  buildings (without tiring people)
• 2. Strength of Steel Increased the height of
  buildings by making them structurally stronger
  leads to Skyscrapers in cities
• 3. Streetcars became a major part of cities
• People had ability to live further away from city
  (suburbs develop)
• Major expansion of cities (annexation of outlying
  areas)

Natural Disasters and Slums

• Crowded, concentrated cities became dangerous to
  live in
• Great Chicago Fire of 1871
• San Francisco Earthquake of 1906
• Overcrowding occurs in many cities
• Many lived in a Tenement Apartment house that is
  run-down and overcrowded.
• Overcrowded neighborhoods, open gutters, raw
  sewage, and disease were known as the Slums

Political Machines

• Organization that influences enough votes to
  control local government
• Traded favors for votes
• Committed illegal acts / accepted bribes
• Tammany Hall Machine in NYC Wm. Tweed - stole
  from city
• Did good things built parks, sewers, schools,
  roads, helped immigrants find jobs/homes
  (supported them gratefully)
