Title: Future Rural Electrification

1
Future Rural Electrification
  • The challenge and a proposal

2
CHALLENGE TO REDUCE COSTS
  • The present backlog of electrification is mainly
in KZN (R3500) and Eastern Cape (R3200)
  • National requirement is 3m connections in 10
    years.
  • Target average cost is R3000 per connection.
  • Need to reduce cost by at least 10 .

PROPOSAL TO FURTHER REDUCE COST
  • Average cost R3000 required
  • Options
  • Non grid - Present R3500. If used then grid
    average needs to be R2500.
  • Not a practical option!
  • Grid-Suggestion is to use light grid (1A)
  • - Cost of meter is a large portion of
    cost (10)
  • -Network cost reduced by 10
  • -Can connect without strengthening
  • -Provides 24 times the energy of non-grid
    at a lower cost.

11
LINKING POVERTY TARIFF TO ELECTRIFICATION SAVINGS
  • Opportunity to benefit poor people more
    effectively.
  • Use no meter and no connection charge.
  • 1A meter allows for colour TV radios and lights,
(4 times the appliances of non grid)
  • Cost saving estimated at 15
  • Poverty tariff immediately provided to the poor.

12
Total energy solution
  • Look for a coordinated approach to supply the
    energy needs.
  • EDRC has shown lighting to be very important to
    all users.
  • Use of a light grid with alternative energies for
    heating and cooking
  • Combine with Concessionaires to meet more
difficult operational issues e.g. more rural we
go the more difficult to operate a grid.
