Title: The Tudor Religious Pendulum

The Tudor Religious Pendulum
  • Part deux Elizabeth I

  • When Edward VI came to the throne England was no
longer a Catholic country. Henry VIII had started
to make England Protestant. However, he had kept
many aspects of the Catholic religion in England.
  • We say that the Church by the end of Henry VIIIs
    reign is Anglo-Catholic.

Changes under Edward
  • Henry VIII started the religious changes in
England. However, it was not until his son Edward
came to the throne that England became a fully
    Protestant country.
  • Edward and his advisors carried out Martin
Luthers ideas to the letter. Services were in
English, the bible was translated, priests were
allowed to marry, churches were made plain and
the Pope and Catholics were made into hate
    figures.

Religion during Elizabeths reign
  • A Middle Way?
  • When Elizabeth came to the throne one of her most
serious problems was solving the religious
problem. Should England be Protestant or
Catholic? If it was Protestant the Catholics
would be unhappy and vice a versa.

6
IMPORTANT!
  • Elizabeth decided to make England Protestant
again, after all she had been brought up as one.
However, she did not make the Church completely
Protestant as Edward (her brother) had done. She
was keen to put an end to the constant conflict
between Catholics and Protestants. So she
compromised and established the Church of England.

7
  • Her aim was to keep the majority of Catholics and
the majority of Protestants happy. They would
each get some of their own traditions in the
Church of England, although ultimately it would
    be Protestant.
