Helium line connections
  • Main helium line will use Tevatron bellows
assembly Conoseal flanges with metal seals.
Have 300 in stock, will use 25.
  • Helium supply and LN2 lines will be the same
flanges as the 2? in the Tevatron (metal seals).
  • Vacuum flange will be either a V-band style like
the Tevatron or a ISO LF banded-clamp, both use
    o-rings.

9
Solenoid Types (configurations)
  • There will need to be 4 types (configurations) of
solenoid cryostats due to the increase in
focusing period length along the linac.
  • Type 1 4 MEBT Sol. 1, 2, 3 16 total 8
  • Type 2 Sol. 4, 5, 6 7 total 4
  • Type 3 Sol. 8, 9, 10 11 total 4
  • Type 4 Sol. 12, 13, 14 15 total 4
  • Each type has a set range of center to center
install lengths. The total range for each type
    is 50 mm.

10
Solenoid Types
  • The center to center ranges are as follows
  • Type 1 install length from 500 550 mm
  • Type 2 install length from 563 613 mm
  • Type 3 install length from 625 675 mm
  • Type 4 install length from 688 738 mm
  • A spacer will be needed between the solenoids on
either side of the chopper since this length is
    980 mm c-c.

11
FNAL HTS Leads
  • It was decided to design and build the upper
copper section at FNAL and have a vendor supply
and integrate the lower HTS section.
  • Working with Sandor to design the upper end.
  • Plan is to fabricate and test the upper section
at FNAL. Parts are on order and are due March
10, 2006. There are brazing and welding steps
that need to be done at FNAL after receiving all
    of the components.

12
FNAL HTS Leads
  • Parameters / details
  • 300 Amp lead
  • Upper copper section conduction cooled only.
  • Requires 13 W heat exchanger at 80 K.
  • Copper rod approximately 0.25 inch diameter x 364
    mm long.
  • Able to use standard Varian medium current
feedthrough for warm end connection (rated for
use at -200C). This is exactly a 0.25 inch
diameter copper rod with a ceramic insulator
    above the flange.

13
FNAL HTS Leads
  • A critical component in this design is the helium
seal between the HTS section and the helium
vessel pipe. This seal needs to provide a leak
tight cold joint (80K) and also electrically
isolate the HTS section from the helium vessel.
  • Procured two standard ceramic feedthroughs from
Insulator Seal. These have been put through
three thermal cycles and have not failed. I
plan on doing many more thermal cycles over the
    next couple of months.

RT Solenoids status and schedule
  • Solenoid cryostat design
  • Conceptual design WIP, need 3 months to
    complete
  • Have nearly final solenoid design
  • Need HTS lead design
  • 4 configurations due to increasing focusing
    period
  • Detailed design (Simmie) 6-9 months
  • Support post details are complete, not released
  • HTS leads
  • Test should be done by April 2006
  • Design work to integrate lower HTS section 6
    months
  • Fabrication by vendor 6-12 months (just a
    guess!)
  • Need to start discussions with vendor(s)

19
RT Solenoids status and schedule
  • Linac machine layout
  • WIP. Integrate components / changes as they
    become available.
  • RT solenoid cryogenic feed return cans
  • This task has not been started.
  • If done by us, need 6 months to design (with
    help from AD)
  • Possibly have AD Cryo do complete design?
