William McKinley

• William McKinley was born on January 29, 1843, in
  Niles, Ohio
• When he was 17, William entered Allegheny College
  in Meadville, Pennsylvania, but health problems
  and his family's tight finances forced him to
  leave after one year.

• He clerked for a short while at the post office
  in Poland, Ohio, after which he taught school.
  His Midwestern tranquility was soon shattered by
  the Civil War, and in spring 1861 he joined the
  Union army.
• McKinley and Ida Saxton married on January 24,
  1871, and their first child, Katherine, was born
  on Christmas Day. In 1873, they lost their second
  child during its birth and Katherine died in
  1875.
• Soon became the 25th president of the U.S.
• Defined by the Spanish-American War and the
  conquest of the Philippines, William McKinley's
  presidency established the power and prestige
  that characterize the modern office. The third
  U.S. president to be assassinated, McKinley was
  shot by an anarchist in Buffalo, New York, on
  September 6, 1901.

What He Was Known For!!

• Under his guidance, the United States won the
  Spanish-American War (1898) and captured,
  purchased, or otherwise gained possession of
  Guam, Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and
  American Samoa.

Why Is This Important??

• He helped bring an end to Spain's empire in the
  Americas.
• It gave the United States the Philippines, Puerto
  Rico, and Guam.
