Title: Water on the Earth

1
Water on the Earth
  • Science - Mrs. Ampezzan
  • 2006

2
The Water Cycle
Water Vapor
Condensation
Evaporation
Precipitation
There is no new water on Earth!
3
The Water Cycle
4
Glacier
  • Glacier - very large, slow-moving sheet of ice.

5
Oceans
Arctic Ocean
Atlantic Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Indian Ocean
Southern Ocean
6
Oceans
  • Most of the water on Earth is in the oceans.
  • The oceans are salt water.
  • The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean.
  • Oceans are very deep. Sunlight cannot reach the
    bottom of the oceans.

7
Lakes and Ponds
Lake
Pond
8
Lake and Ponds
  • Lake - a body of water with land all around it or
    around most of it.
  • Pond - a body of water with land all around it or
around most of it. A pond is usually small and
shallow enough for the sun to reach the bottom.
  • Basin - the bottom of a lake.

9
River
A natural flow of water that runs into an ocean,
lake, or other body of water. Rivers are usually
fed by tributaries.
10
River
  • Source - where a river starts
  • Mouth - where a river ends
  • Banks - the sides of a river
  • Bed - the bottom of a river
  • Run-off - water that cannot be soaked up by the
ground and it runs across the ground

11
TributariesA river that flows into another river.
  • The Missouri River runs into the Mississippi
    River.
  • The Ohio River runs into the Mississippi River.
  • The Arkansas River runs into the Mississippi
    River.

12
Streams
Streams are small rivers that flow into bigger
rivers.
13
Delta
  • The middle of a river often flows slowly.
  • This slow water can lets small bits of rock and
    soil fall.
  • These pieces of soil and rock form deltas.
  • A delta is an area of many small soil deposits.

delta
14
Sandbar
  • Sandbar - areas of sand and soil deposited by
    waves

15
Ground Water
Water that is found under the ground.
16
Wells
When the pump is working the water that is close
is sucked in first. Soon this area becomes dry.
17
Wells
  • Well - when you dig down to get ground water
  • Ground water - water that is under the ground.
  • Water table - the top of an underground stream.
  • Artesian well - a well drilled at a low point and
water will come without any pumping

Water Changes the Earth
  • Moving water is the main cause of weathering and
    erosion.
  • Rain hits rocks and some dissolve.
  • Rain hits the ground and moves the soil.
  • Rivers move rocks and soil.
  • Soil and rocks are carried by a river. When they
drop in one area they form a delta.
  • Waves wear away the land.

20
Frozen Water Changes the Earth
hail
snow
sleet
ice
  • Frozen water ice, frost, snow and hail

21
Weathering
  • Weathering is the breaking up of rocks and soil.
  • Weathering is caused by rain, wind and ice.
  • Weathering can be helpful or harmful.

22
Erosion
  • Erosion is the wearing down and moving of rocks
    and soil.
  • Erosion moves rocks and soil from one place to
    another.
  • Wind and moving water move the rocks and soil in
    Erosion.

23
Canyons
  • V- Shaped Canyon - low area between hills and
    mountains made by a river

24
Canyons
  • U-Shaped Canyon - a low area cut out by a glacier.
