Title: Energy and Life ATP

1
Energy and Life - ATP
2
Cells and Energy
  • Metabolism, which includes manufacturing cellular
    components and repairing cellular structures,
    requires great quantities of energy.
  • Energy is stored in the chemical bonds of the
    molecule adenosine triphosphate ATP.
  • Phosphate groups are charged particles and
particles with the same charge do not like being
    too close to each other.

3
Adenosine Triphosphate
  • The ATP molecule has three main parts.
  • A. Adenine (nitrogen containing base)
  • B. Ribose (sugar)
  • C. 3 phosphate groups in a series.
  • ATP is a portable form of energy currency.

4
ATP Cycle
  • The formation and breakdown of ATP is cyclic.
  • Many proteins have a specific site where ATP can
bind. When the phosphate bond is broken and the
energy released, the cell can use the energy.
  • ADP is released and another molecule of ATP binds
    to the site.

5
ATP to ADP
6
ATP
  • ATP cannot be stockpiled.
  • Each second, approximately 10 million molecules
of ATP are made and recycled.
  • A resting human uses about 100 lbs. per day of
ATP, but the amount present is less than a gram.
