  • What Is I.T. ?

5
Definition Of I.T.
  • Branch of technology concerned with the
    dissemination, processing, and storage of
    information.

6
This Is A Piece Of I.T.
7
So Are These
8
And So Is This
9
Most Basic Form Of I.T.
Writing
  • How Has This Shaped Us?
  • To show this we will look at literate and
    non-literate societies

10
Non-Literate Society
  • The Masai are a very famous warrior tribe in
Kenya whose lives centre around herding cattle.
  • Women spend much time doing bead work. They
decorate animal hides, gourds, and make beaded
jewellery including arm and leg bracelets and
    amulets.
  • Their wealth is measured by the number of cattle
    they have acquired.
  • Their society is reminiscent of what ours would
have been like thousands of years ago.

11
Literate Society
  • Nowadays the average businessman would spend most
of his time in front of a computer screen.
  • His wealth is measured by the amount of
money(printing press) or material possessions he
    has.
  • Writing is everywhere, in all professions and
aspects of life, writing is a necessity.

12
How I.T. Shapes Us
  • In the past people needed to be physically fit in
order to operate machines such as the printing
    press.
  • Nowadays, however, people are rooted to the spot
in front of a computer screen.

Cultural Shaping
  • Information Technology has shaped our culture
  • The Media
  • The Clock
  • Our Dependence

15
Media
16
  • The Media is part of Information Technology
  • The media uses the internet, TV, radio and
Newspapers to display information and therefore
    is a form of IT

The Clock
24
The clock is IT
  • It is a piece of technology that provides us with
    time information
  • Information technology is defined as the use of
mechanical, electronic or other means to display
    or store information

25
The ancients
  • The sundial
  • They didnt consider that Time is money

  • Time is money
  • Appointments

27
Dependence On IT
28
No longer dependent on nature
  • E.g. clock we no longer rely on the sun to give
    us time information
  • Work is no longer sunrise to sunset

29
Now dependent on Information Technology
  • Modern systems couldnt operate without the
    information technologies like computers behind
    them
  • Air Traffic Control and stealth bombers for
    example

30
Y2K

latest4.htm
  • People get paranoid when there is a chance that
    the IT may fail
  • Millennium bug

31
Technology decided where people should spend
money
  • Billions of dollars were spent to fix the
    problems with the technology

32
  • Because we depend on information technology, we
    have been shaped by it.

Business
  • In Business area
  • Business companies are dependant Information
    Technology
  • Use I.T. to make more accurate decisions

35
How I.T. shapes us through business?
  • Stock Market
  • Shift of power from away from Government

36
Currency
  • Originally Government can control the value of a
    currency
  • By issuing more money the currency weakens
  • Reasons
  • Increase Exports
  • More competitive curreny

37
Stock Market
Investors attack a countrys currency
Countrys Currency is devalued
Economy of Country is weakened
38
Science Medicine
  • The Human Genome Project is a superior example of
the powerful impact by Information Technology.
  • Using IT (i.e. books on previous research in that
area), it was possible to map the human genome.
  • How this shapes us??? Eventually we will be
able to cure fatal diseases such as cancer and
    remove birth defects e.g. Diabetes

41
Summary
  • In countless regions, we are highly completely
    dependant on Information Technology, and
therefore, are shaped by Information technology

42
Group Summary
  • Mark has shown that even the most basic forms of
    I.T. shape society.
  • Jason has shown that media has shaped our culture
    and therefore our society.
  • Amy has shown that I.T. also shapes society
    through business and medicine.
