Cuban Missile Crisis
  • Castro confiscated properties, nationalized some
    American businesses, demanded rise in price of
    sugar and amount of exports trade embargo
    enacted by Eisenhower administration towards the
    end of 1960
  • Castro turned towards Soviet Union who promised
    to buy 100 million in sugar over 5 years
  • America trained Cuban exiles who had fled to
    Guatemala to invade Cuba air strikes began on
    15 April and Cuban air force was attacked. The
    air backup for the exiles was suddenly withdrawn
    as the exiles moved in on 17 April 1961 ended
    on 19 April 1961 100 dead, prisoners, later
    ransomed
  • 1961-1962 Soviets giving Cuba weapons equipped
    with ballistic missiles aimed at USA
