Title: Emergency Survival Scenario

1
Emergency Survival Scenario
2
The Scenario
  • The Seattle area has been hit by a massive
earthquake which has damaged 90 of the
    infrastructure and utilities.
  • The metropolitan area is immobile and on
lockdown. The threat of starvation and disease
    looms over everyone.

3
Hope for Relief
  • Before the power went out TV and Radio stations
announced that should an earthquake hit, supplies
(food, water) would probably arrive in one week
from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)

4
One Neighborhoods Dilemma
  • Joan owns the house where emergency supplies are
stored. All community members have agreed that
she will manage any emergency situation. They
have all contributed to the cache of food and
supplies. There is enough for the neighborhood to
sustain itself for about a week..

5
An Unforeseen Need
  • Joe Ross is part of the community, and he has a
family member, Alex, with a medical condition
requiring three times the normal amount of
    supplies.

6
A Vote
  • As representatives gather Joan informs them of
this previously unforeseen needJoes family must
obtain a larger distribution of the supplies than
the others, in order to sustain the health of
Alex. The community decides to vote on the matter.

7
DISCUSS
  • What do you think the community
  • should vote to do
  • Stick to the original plan and distribute
supplies equally regardless of this unforeseen
    need of Alexs?
  • Give up the additional food and supplies to
    Alex?

8
The Decision
  • In the vote, the community decides that each
family will take their whole weeks share of
supplies upfront and not give extra to Joes
    family.

9
Samanthas Override
  • Joan, as the Community Watch leader thinks the
    vote is a mistaken decision.
  • She decides to
  • deny giving all supplies away right now
  • give extra to Joes family

10
Take a Position
  • Statement
  • As the leader, Joan made the right decision to
supersede the community vote, giving extra to
Joes family in order to protect the health of
    Alex.

11
Lauras News
  • Laura, a neighbor, declares news that no more
supplies are coming in for an additional week or
so. The community convinces Joanthat it is
necessary to immediately distribute ALL the
supplies equally, a decision which will most
    likely kill the sick individual.

12
In the light of this news..
  • Panicking at this news because there is now a
greater risk all of them may run out of food and
water, Joanchanges her mind. She organizes a
group to distribute all of the supplies equally.
She notifies Joes family of the decision,
which will likely result in the death of Alix.

13
Take a Position
  • Facing the threat of no more food arriving for a
long time, Joanmade the right decision to
preserve the survival of the entire group, over
    that of Alex.

14
FEMA Arrives
  • Six days later FEMA trucks pull up with relief
supplies. It becomes clear that Laura had lied
    about the news.

15
As a result.
  • Alex has died from lack of sufficient supplies
and Laura confesses she lied, afraid that her
family would end up with too little if extra was
    given to Joes family.

16
Discuss
  • Who should be held responsible for Alixs death?
  • Is Joan or Laura more responsible?
