    perpatrator

  • As children, they master social aggression

7
Gender differences in childhoodThe Boys
  • Starting at about age 3, boys attempt to dominate
  • Older boys will comply with a male peers
suggestion but not a females especially if a male
    is watching
  • Boys play win/lose games with set goals
  • Boys play in large groups

  • Play involving process, not goals
  • Play games with no winners or losers
  • Play with one or two best friends

9
Adolescence
  • Boys are horrified at the idea of becoming girls
  • Girls see some real advantages in being male.
  • Boys self esteem soars.
  • Girls self esteem plummets at puberty.

10
In adulthood she thinks
  • That everything remains negotiable while trying
to do a good job, she tries to talk things over
  • She may be very bad at sucking up loses
  • She still wants to play with people who are nice
  • Not used to hierarchical structures/ not
    comfortable in them.

11
Gender Linguistics
  • Again, proving themselves vs. being liked
  • Conversational differences
  • women start more conversations but men decide
    the topic
  • Women put people at ease, men put people on
    the spot
  • Men do 95 of the interrupting of women in
    mixed company

12
So main differences so far
  • Connectedness over independence for women, its
    always relationship
  • Social dominance
  • Aggression
  • The most consistent and strongest one is
    sexuality.

13
Sexuality
  • Male initiate sex and women say no (not really)
    but
  • Women are more conservative, men moderately
    permissive (did I say moderately?)
  • Casual sex endorsed by 54 of men, 32 of women

14
Evolutionary Psychology Sexuality
  • The why per E.P. people
  • Men seek to reproduce widely, women wisely

15
So what do both sexes want?
  • Physical attractiveness slightly more important
    for men
  • The man must be taller than the woman. This is an
    extremely strong norm.
  • Intelligence slightly more important for women.
  • Compatibility.

16
Ladies firstwhat women want
  • Womens preference more complex than any other
    species or gender
  • Females of all species prefer a mate with
    economic resources
  • Are resources more plentiful from 1 mate than
    many?
  • Do fathers have a protective effect on children?

17
What else?
  • Men slightly older than themselves well, they do
    have better resources.
  • Hardworking ambitious
  • Dependable Stable

18
Big Strong
  • In addition to men being taller, they must also
  • Be over 6 tall (preferred by 80 of the women)
  • Cross culturally true as well

19
And finally
  • Women want commitment
  • Demonstrated by spending time with her, meeting
her mother, giving up sex with others, talking of
the M word, talking of children, fidelity, and of
    course expensive gifts.

Men want fertility
  • As measured by the obvious cues of
  • Youth 2. Health
  • 2. Physically measured by the infamous waist to
hip ratio-divide your butt into your waist
  • Needs to be .67 to .80 for fertility

22
Waist to Hip again
  • This is a ratio centerfolds and beauty contest
    winners got thinner but
  • They still have a w to h ratio of .70
  • .70 is the American ideal
  • Also signals general health less heart attacks
    diabetes, high b.p., gallbladder, stroke

23
Men want attractive wives
  • Again, not purely cultural
  • Most consistent, psychological difference
  • Influence by media making it worse
  • but
  • Babies as young as 2 to 3 months old prefer
    attractive faces

24
Do trophy wives improve mens status?
  • Yes.
  • Does this also work for women?
  • No.

25
What about gays lesbians?
  • Do gay men prefer what straight men prefer, only
    the opposite sex?
  • Which answer would favor evolutionary theory?
  • Both gays/lesbians act like heteros in mate
    preferences.

26
Can men really get what they want?
  • Yes, if they are wealthy powerful.
  • Are men aware of this? Unfortunately, yes.
  • The more they make, the younger the woman they
    seek.

27
Summary
  • What do women want? Security which comes in a
    tall, dependable, well off package.
