Interacting With Motorcycles

• Scan through windows of cars to look for
  motorcyclists or other roadway users.
• Use the IPDE process to help prevent conflicts
  with motorcycles.

Where to Look for Motorcycles

• Vehicle turning left in front of motorcyclist
• Vehicle turning right at intersection or driveway
• Motorcyclist turning left
• Motorcyclist passing car on right or left
• Motorcyclist meeting an oncoming car
• Tailgating motorcyclist
• Motorcyclist riding in drivers blind spot

Passing a Motorcyclist

• Stay back until you start to pass.
• Do not tailgate a cyclist.
• Execute your passing maneuver.
• Tap your horn.
• Use the entire left lane for passing.
• Return to the right lane when you can see the
  cyclist in you rearview mirror.

Bicyclist's Responsibilities

• Ride on the right hand side of the road
• Obey all signs
• Walk bicycles across busy intersections
• Wear light colored clothing

Protecting Bicyclists

• Use the IPDE process constantly
• Prevent conflicts with bicyclists
• Warn with the horn
• Signal early
• Reduce speed
• Look for cyclists before opening doors

Pedestrians

• Crosswalks and intersections
• Alleys and driveways

• The driver as a pedestrian

Parking Lots

• No faster than 15 mph
• Follow the routes and arrows
• Avoid tight parking spaces
• Do not back into an angle space
• Avoid hitting the vehicle next to you with your
  door
• Watch for others who may be backing out

• School bus
• Approach slowly
• Do not proceed until the lights stop flashing and
  the stop sign is withdrawn
• Look carefully
• Position car
• Communicate
• Control speed

Emergency Vehicles

• Be alert for emergency vehicles
• Find a place on the right to safely pull out of
  the way
• If you are in heavy traffic, move in the
  direction other drivers are moving
• Once out of the way stay there until the
  emergency vehicle passes

Following Trucks

• More than two second intervals
• Trucks can stop faster when on wet pavement
• Stay out of the trucks blind spots
• Trucks making right turns

Passing Trucks

• Check front and rear traffic
• Signal lane change
• It takes several seconds longer to pass a truck
• Try not to stay next to the truck
• Return to the right lane when you can see the
  truck in your rear view mirror or the driver
  blinks his lights
• Do not slow down when you return to the right lane
